Actually yes it was, so they probably lowered the tolerance for the weekend?

sonyxperiageek:Only the ones inside the tunnel are being used.

OP, might be worth asking them for an image proof as then that will tell whether you got pinged inside or outside tunnel.

To late as unfortunately I've paid already!

... Was it from police, or NZTA. Cause police only manage the one at the start/end. While the NZTA/Auckland transport own the ones inside.

...

I'm interested in the source of this info.

My understanding is:

  • NZTA don't issue speeding fines
  • NZTA don't own any speed cameras. (But yes ,there are NZTA owned traffic monitoring cameras in the tunnel.)
  • AT have nothing to do with operating the Waterview tunnel

but I'm happy to be educated otherwise.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

You are 100% correct. NZTA may help fund cameras but they cannot issue speeding tickets.

But that's not the kiwi way - let's try and figure out how we can beat it instead.....

Oops. May have been some bad interpretation by myself. Raise a valid point.

I had reas a chain when Police were asked for the position of their cameras , basically then fired off to nzta. Who responded with the entrance ones only.

There are speed cameras on entry and exit heading north.

There is a camera on entry heading south.

In both directions there are three sets of possible locations for cameras, they are located behind speed signage, but the flash unit or radar is located in front of the speed signage. At each point the have one camera box and one radar box per lane, so the cameras could be in any lane or all lanes.

From memory heading South they are behind speed sign one, three and the last one, ill have to double check.

Heading North the are behind speed signage one three and the second to last one, ill have to double check.

I have seen a pic from a car caught in the tunnel, so they can definitely be active.

There have been rumors of average speed cameras but nothing confirmed yet that i know of.

I think it's only a matter of time before this becomes more and more common across the roading networks. That and other detections seen overseas. I was having a casual conversation with someone who works as a lawyer at auckland transport and they want to use a lot of the cameras to do things like speed monitoring, ensuring vehicles are licensed, phone handling detection (she's had to remind them they can't just start doing this everywhere) -- which apparently most of their cameras are able to handle, it's only a matter of a law change before it becomes a reality for fining drivers based on the information they can gather

Yeah. Cameras are way more useful than they use to be now. Speed Camera vans (and static) don't even need flashes in most cases now. The sensors are in line with camera CMOS and way more sensitive to the lowest light

Low angle cameras have been installed on the Christchurch CNC overbridge supports recently. Started monitoring the T2 Lane. ANPR + IR ready to enforce it.

Oddly, no-one really brings those up (or the ones at airport monitoring the pickup short term loops to do the free-period validation monitoring). Only really when there is advertising involved.

Gurezaemon:

Knowing NZ drivers, there will be some out there thinking "So that means I can speed up to 130 for most of it, then pull over for 2 minutes just before the second camera to bring the average down to below 80"...

not a good idea you have to decelerate to 0 wasting brakes and time.

drive in and park for 10 mins then drive at 240ks

Journey Time Cameras have been installed in Waterview since it opened, but they didn't issue fines for a couple of months as they were calibrated both the cameras and the system which issues the infringement notices. Word is these types of cameras will be rolled out elsewhere as they are far more accurate in detecting infringements, less false positives. Overseas these types of cameras have a far greater impact on vehicle compliance and safety, so not surprising Waka Kotahi want to roll them out here.

I've heard rumours of other places around the traps where they might be installed, but never seen any definitive proof, it's always just been gossip. They're well suited for road corridors with definitive entry and exit points, little or no stops in between, no intersections etc. Personally I would be surprised if we don't see them in places like the passes & gorge roads on the State Highway network, as well as places where speed routinely causes accidents (e.g. over the Devils Staircase, between Queenstown / Frankton and Kingston), within the next 5-10 years.

Could also be utilised on the northern tollways in conjunction with collecting tolls.

Minimal on and off ramps.

Fees and fines, all nicely integrated.

Yes, those are the ones.

I counted them off again the other day but have forgotten again.

From North to south i think its First set, then the last two sets.

From South to North its the first two sets then the last set.

When the tunnel first opened i spent a fair amount of time looking for possible cameras, these are the only things that make sense.

I have heard the rumour about average speed traps, but have seen no evidence so far, but  have seen a pic of a car caught by a speed camera in the tunnel.
