I have long thought that an EV should tow a generator to make inter city trips.

The straw you use to fill the EV is no match for the waterpipe you are using to deplete it on a long trip,

A tesla model 3 is rated @15Kwh/100km,  so on a open road trip you will be pulling at least 12 Kwh/hour out of it probably more

A 7KW gen will set you back $9K and weighs 120 kg

So if your battery is anywhere near empty you will be forced to travel less than 50km in each hour ... not really helpful for intercity trips,

If you want to put energy into your tesla as fast as it is potentially using it, so you can run nonstop, you would need something like https://generatorshop.co.nz/shop/16-5kva-single-phase-diesel-generator/

Only 670kg dry weight

On the plus side it only uses 4.9 litres of diesel / hour at full load. And will run for 11 hours on its 55 litre tank.

a) Only if you start from zero battery charge. Your 7KW generator would give you back a half hour's usage every hour. So, if you start with 500km range, then 5 hours later your battery is still half full. While you use that, you get another 125km range. Probably a total of 1000km at 100kph before you have to slow down to 50kph.

b) Drag (which is where your kWh are you're mostly battling at 100kph) increases with the square of the speed, so if you run at 70kph you're using half the power compared to 100kph. Still too painful for intercity trips, but better than 50kph.

But combining these 2 ideas, if you go at 90kph, your usage is 20% less. You have 600km range on your battery, and ~7 hours later you still have about 400km left.

If we engineer all our cars , like Telstras, to be capable of the trips we do 2% of the time, we're going to run out of kids to mine all the Cobalt we'll need.

If you can rent a towable generator, do your long trip, drop the generator back to the rental place and run around another city, you get the benefits of EV and ICE worlds.

If this becomes a thing, there'll be rental places like there is petrol stations now e.g. on the outskirts of town.

But I suppose there's nothing to stop them running out of generator on the long weekends.

I haven't seen this said, so... please don't run a generator in the boot of your car, EV or not. They produce fumes and hot exhaust. Breathing in exhaust is not good for you.

I believe most cars also refuse to drive while charging, to stop you ripping the charging cable it. It might be possible to disable this. I think in some cases some of the power electronics are shared, so it fundamentally isn't possible.
