I believe (some?) petrol DI engines now will do a little squirt in the intake manifold in certain conditions to give the backs of the valves a bit of a wash. Don't know any details.

yes my toyota does that. it has both port injection and direct injection. apparently

..it would be hard to know how bad it was unless you had either the inlet manifold off or had the head off.

 

 

The company that does our engine fluid analysis also offers scoping.
Their tech was saying Amazon now sells the equivalent of his multi $thousand articulated commercial borescope for a couple of $hundred..

 

It'd be one way of checking for carbon deposits without too much dismantling.

Scoping seems to be a good 1st.step. There's one YT video of an Audi R something where the operator was saying actually it's not too bad but the manifold etc was already off by then. If the dealership has the gear they'll be itching to use it.
