Just spoke to a Kia dealer. The Hybrid and PHEV will be available first, possiby by the end of August depending on colour and accessories.  EV's not likely to ne available until the end of the year but if you plonk down a deposit now, it will lock in the price as shown.

Going to try to test the only demonstrator out this weekend (the Hybrid) just to get a feel for the look and seating.

Dingbatt:

I just downloaded the brochure and in the EV specs it shows light spec having wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto while the Water spec has wired.

Surely that has to be a typo….

But the HEV and PHEV are the same. The higher specced models says “wired”.

Im not a particular fan of AA or AC, but wireless would be a bonus not a downgrade.

See my post above. This is prevalent on other vehicles, such as the CX-5 for example having wireless Carplay on the GLX and GSX but not on the higher grades. I highly doubt it's a typo as you suggest.

And yet the last two BMWs I tried both had Sat Nav, wired and wireless AC/AA. So is it the infotainment system provider to these OEMs that is the problem?

tanivula: I see the full range is available in NZ!

https://kia.co.nz/vehicles/niro/range-and-specifications/

All vehicles get a rebate.

Seems to be Lacking the GT-Line pure EV.

Seems like an odd omission, given the same $4k price differential as the PHEV, would still have it under the $80k rebate cap.

Big improvement in both pricing and spec over the outgoing model (and the kona).

- Bigger car (475L boot)

- Frunk (just 20L, but still handy to put rarely used stuff in).

- Improved tow rating (750kg braked, 300kg unbraked, up from 300kg).

- 230v power outlet inside the car on the water trim (assume this is 16A peak capable like the EV6).

- 11kW AC charging on all trims

- Rear seat heating duct

Great option for those who want a smaller, tighter turning SUV than say the model Y (10.6m turning circle vs 12.1 m on the model Y).

Does highlight what great value the EV6 Air LR was before the price hike. Bigger battery, more range, RWD, much larger tow rating, 800v fast charging and trim level similar to the "Water" (led Headlights, powered tailgate, V2L interior socket).

Sadly does seem like the heat pump has been dropped, but analysis of this on the EV6 thread indicated it wasn't a deal breaker.

Pricing likely will cause issues for some other (non china) EV's.

Who's going to buy the Ioniq EV, when just $2k more (Entry vs Light, Elite vs water), gets you 149km more WLTP range, 50% more motor power, Much bigger boot (350L vs 475L), Frunk, tow rating etc.

Yeah, there are definitely exceptions to the rule so clearly there are some complexities to what different manufacturers have been able to do. I haven't researched it so don't fully understand the detail, but I imagine all manufacturers will overcome the problem eventually.

Hyundai have always had much higher advertised prices than their Kia counterparts with the Tucson vs Sportage being a good example. I assume this is because Hyundai do more aggressive fleet discounting, and hence there is more room for private buyers to negotiate.

yup if i had $70k to burn and I don't need 4WD that would have been a no brainer.

to this day I still wonder whether I should have paid the deposit for that.

i still don't know about the 4WD bit living in the deep south.

sure i only need it say 5 days a year. (as the planet is warming it was only 2 days last year, yup snow storm out of the blue when i was 100km from any form of civilization)

but the difference is whether you get home or get stuck in the middle of nowhere 100km from civilization.

That's exactly why I have an AWD CX-5. It's not often that I need it, but when I need it then I really need it.

This is why I'm probably more interested in the Solterra than the Niro.

<snip>

The dealer I spoke to said they were pleased with the pricing (relatively) so there is a clear differential between the Niro and EV6.

Looking at the pricing the PHEV GT-Line becomes attractive (sort of) at $62,240 after rebate versus $65,365 for the Niro EV Water.

Since most of my wife's use of the car is city driving, the PHEV range will suit her fine and all the extras that the GT-Line provides will make the driving much nicer.

While I've bought a Tesla, I know I'll never reach the level of loyalty Tesla's most devoted fans are at - the most one-eyed of EVangelists out there! One only has to read the NZ FB groups to get enough exposure to this.

You only have to read one particular person on every Tesla thread to get the same impression.

Infotainment on legacy car brands is always crap. It's something they aren't good at.

It's not a technology problem, you can buy a third party dongle to convert wired to wireless.
