There’s an important distinction to be made here. Aerial imagery is not the same as satellite imagery. Aerial imagery is updated far more often and tends to be what councils are using.
Haljor: Is anyones Apple Maps showing a road closure on Lewis pass rd for the last few days? I rang NZTA and they said the road was open. Apple Maps is refusing to map me a route north through Lewis pass (although the reverse direction seems to be fine).
For me Apple Maps is showing two closures on the Lewis Pass. One of them is at Springs Junction and relates to overnight closures occurring this week. The other one is half way between Springs Junction and the Hanmer turnoff, and appears to be incorrect as there is no such closure showing on the Waka Kotahi journey planner, although interestingly it's showing as having updated just 3 minutes ago.
Oblivian: Satellite updates are last decade now :)
They use buzzing cessnas at low level for GIS and local outsourcing. Most of Canterbury has been being done again for last few months while sun is high and clouds are less.
Nearmap use to be a good one for Australian regions. But subscription now.
Auckland council certainly does or used to use aerial photography for mapping things such as trees and swimming pools - but I would be amazed if that imagery ended up on Google Maps.
There seems to be all sorts of public domain imagery out there, aggregated from many sources. It's amazing really. Good mapping used to be a prized strategic asset in times gone by. These days you can peek at military installations in Moscow from your desk.

Yes, that’s what I see as well. It’s that false one which is causing me problems. I’ve “reported” the issue twice on Apple Maps over the last few days but no response. Not sure how to go about getting it removed.
I just had another look and it's still there but the 'last updated' time seems to be still within a couple of minutes of the current time. So there must be some rogue update happening repeatedly every few minutes.
I live in a new medium density complex in Wellington with one way streets. There is a problem whereby Apple Maps directs drivers the wrong way down one of the one way streets and Apple have ignored the report that I sent to them more than a year ago.
I have just reported their incorrect location of the Carter Fountain in Wellington so let's see how that goes. They are currently showing it as being on land but, since I swim to it regularly, I'm pretty sure that's not correct!
