They don’t seem to have learned anything from any other expressway/motorway/roadway, either. Roading in NZ is appalling. Someone needs to figure out a better way to build roads.

I am not a roading engineer but I would bet money that we know how to build better roads. We just don't want to pay the initial cost to build them. MVP (minimal viable product) aka $$$.

With them leaving the Raumati straights as a tiny 100km zone between two massive big 110km zones, NZTA are going to generate so much revenue they'll probably manage to pay off TG, M2PP, PP2O and 02NL in a few months.

That stretch will also be the only part of SH1 north of Tawa with no alternative route once Ō2NL is done.
If, for example, a loaded LPG tanker gets involved in an accident there, then bingo!, the rest of the North Island is cut off from the delights of Wellington (or possibly vice versa 😉)

I mean technically there's Waterfall Road, but yes it's not ideal.. I really wish they'd just get rid of QE Park, whack another main road through the middle and then open the rest up for development. It's just such an utter waste of land right now.

Management of our roads is as tragic as the management of our water. Pouring money down the toilet and into the moana.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Please no. Queen Elizabeth Park is the last area of natural dunes on Kāpiti’s coastline...do we really need more roads? We should learn from the mistakes of the US.

We don't actually need that many more roads, but in areas without resiliency (e.g. Raumati Straights) yeah we absolutely do. .. Mostly we just need lots of the existing ones to be much, much bigger.. E.g. Every single state highway should be 4+ lanes for their entire length.

It would be good if they formalised the DOC rangers road (the farm land section) through from McKays to Poplar (by the school), even if it had a 30km limit and cycle track etc, it would be a perfect alternate when Raumati Straights is completely shut off.   Currently mostly a single land gravel road, but it is there.

Even if they just upgraded/sealed the Emerald Glen / Waterfall route would be something.

One road we do need that would help with the load on Transmission gully and SH1, is creating a good alternative route north via SH2, but that needs the Rimutuka Hill road to be replaced. It is unsafe to drive and in a big quake, it is likely to lead to the death of users on it due to slips, and rendering the rote impassable for potentially years. If it was a building IMO it would have likely been red stickered. Even now they have to regularly close it for maintenance and it has lots of slips, and it is an essential trade route. eg We didn't learn anything from the Manawatu Gorge warnings and eventual failure, but at least with that there were some alternatives that were close such as the saddle road. There isn't anything close to the Rimutuka hill road apart from the rail tunnel and they would have to make that one way for cars. As a rail tunnel is doesn't get as much use as it should due to cost and speed, far cheaper and quicker driving across the hill.

But if NZs growth strategy is  importing the popualtion and selling each other houses, we are going to need more roads and infrastructure

IMO it is infrastructure in general. And people think we can be trusted having a nuclear power plant if we can't even get a sewage treatment plant right. If that failed it would be the end of NZ IMO in terms of its clean green image and tourism and food production.

Fantastic.  Those 110km stretches add up to as significant difference on long journeys.

A whole 1min, 28sec for Transmission Gully in saved time.

We were on the Northern Gateway motorway yesterday (Auckland - Warkworth). Along its length it changes at various places 100 > 110 > 100 > 110 > 100.

It’s the middle 100 section that’s annoying because there’s no apparent reason for it - it’s all part of the newer extension of the motorway. I guess there’s some technical reason but not obvious to me.

Yes, it is, and worse is how many people seem to just keep doing 90 thru both of them in the right lane.

The tunnel is the worst bit with people seeming to think that 60 is correct like the waterview one gets.

Also annoying is the small number of those small circular speed limit signs on the side of the motorway. There’s one at the start of each limit change - and that’s it - no repeats. It’s not always clear or easy to know what limit is in effect.
