surfisup1000: Tapping the brakes usually does the trick -- although this persons actively stupid aggressiveness indicates they could be a violent ex-convict too.

This works amazingly well here in NZ. Norwegians can be a bit thicker I think and even putting on the fog light to signal people to keep more distance doesn't seem to work.

A friend had an old Ford Escort, the reverse switch in the gearbox was poked, so put a switch on the dash.

Reverse lights make people back off real fast!

In my dreams (and these are not dreams to act on!) I could see the use of a couple of 1000 meter beams pointing out the rear window for those kind of situations...

Not being able to pull over and having meeting traffic come against you IS dangerous. If the choice is between meeting someone head on or crashing into someone from the side I know what I would choose. How about you?

I agree tapping the brakes usually works (but when it doesn't)....but gearing down (a gear) works even better (yes..very risky). Guaranteed you will have their undivided attention and a respectable following distance will result.

Funny how you can see the whites of their eyes...

Either action isn't really suggested in driving safety courses...

For what it's worth, the safest thing to do in a situation where you're being tailgated is to *gradually* slow down (ease off the throttle, rather than apply brakes) until you have twice the normal following distance between you and the car in front of you. This provides for sufficient stopping space for you, and the tailgater in the event of a sudden stop.

If you're not in the left-most lane, move left as soon as it's safe to do so. (and stay there unless you're overtaking!! ;-)

...and let the tailgater past you at the earliest opportunity.

For all you know, they might be an off-duty cop or paramedic who have been called to a major accident/domestic/whatever just down the road...

I just use the windscreen washers, the spray goes over the top of car. If the tailgater has an expensive shiny car they usually back off.

Yeah, cops undercover, dressed as youths, wearing hoddies, driving a WRX with cut springs and missing half of their exhaust system... :)

Heres one.
Driving with some mates. One in the back seat had a big one the night before. A few corners later he was out the window spewing up,..
The dude behind me wasnt tailgating me but he had a flash car and backed up quite a bit, Cracked us up haha.
