Fred99: I doubt the $350 belt replacement would include the cost of waterpump, new seals etc, which might add another couple of hundred $. It sounds too cheap to me - especially from an OEM dealership.

Why?

Do you know what the belt actually costs? Bugger all.
Crank seals, minimal.
The most expensive thing is the water pump, and that's not major either.......it's the labour you are paying for, because of all the bits they need to remove, adjusting timing and such, and re assembling it all.

If it is the 3S or 4S engine they are both non-interference act wikipedia. Two points on that.

Engine stopping suddenly is dangerous on the road. +After a short time (time depending on model and circumstances) you lose power steering and braking assist. You personally might (irrationally if so) think you can handle that in all diverse circumstances - but can everyone who drives that car?

Non-interference does not cause engine damage if the belt fails. Mostly true but not entirely true. It can be messy.

Cambelt replacement, several other things are replaced at that service interval as pointed out above. A well set up and tooled workshop takes less time than one that is not. Get another quote.

Imho spend the money. It will add a little value when you sell anyway.

Also water pumps tend to have the same service life as the cambelt. If this fails, water will spew out of your engine rapidly and likely to cause overheating, also likely to ruin your engine.

If you intend on driving the car, I'd get it done. I have had one fail in a "non-interference" engine and it completely ruined it, because it was just loose and slipped a few teeth, so don't trust that.

The only time I would skip it is if the car failing the next wof is a forgone conclusion for something not worth repairing like rust on it.

The drive belt and the power steering belt was done last year when the car wouldn't start at the supermarket carpark. One of them says, due to the age of the car is it worth the bother or just get another car in time.

Probably a $800 job - timing belt, tensioners, seal and the water pump.
Let alone flush the trans $350 or spend more money in flushing the brakes, coolant etc if they are performing now.

Cost them $5,500 at time of purchase.

Ha I saw an ad at Tauranga Toyota dealer last week. $350 inc GST to replace timing belt for all Toyota model.

Pacific Toyota?? They've been doing this since December 2013. Not a bad price..

We're in Wellington. Quoted at $1079 that includes the waterpump etc .. but was told if they are good and don't need replacing it's $786 without them.

Some OEM cambelt kits (incl waterpump) for Toyotas cost $400 retail - so that's why I don't believe it included waterpump.

They have two deals going, one at $295, one at $495, depending on model, and it's only a limited range. The $295 deal is only for some diesel models.
Waterpump replacement isn't included with either deal.

If the car is fine to use for a few years, the repairs like this may be worth it. Plus you know what you are driving. The receipts will add some value, at least make it quicker to sell at the high point of the second hand price range on the day.

labour is likely $200~$400 +gst

timing belt kit + water pump is likely up to $400 +gst

you could buy kit+pump for under half that from amazon and alike, and find a local mechanic to replace it

200k is stretching it, no pun intended
