jarledb: Somewhat related: If you are wondering if swapping in and out of lanes when its congestion on the road will get you there faster, you should watch the Mythbusters test:

This really has reduced a lot of stress for me. Knowing that weaving in and out of traffic actually doesn't make a big difference (other than raising your stress levels) really is nice knowledge to have. Got to see it in practise in horrible Auckland traffic last time I was there, was fun to see how little help it was for the typical BMW and Audi drivers to practise their slalom lane swapping..

And when you consider that the lane swapping actions potentially cause ripples through the traffic that end up affecting everyone, I think it's better usually just to chill and plod along in a single lane.

ckc:

The first part though, really gets me when it comes to motorway on-ramps. Two lanes merging into one heading onto the motorway is probably the most ridiculous and pointless thing I've ever seen. I think our road designers were last seen in the UK designing the New Towns.

Many of them are three lanes trying to merge  - the 2 at the signals, plus the truck/bus/T2 thru-lane. Theree lanes of traffic trying to merge into the already congested left lane of the motorway system. Semi truck n trailer units as long as 7 cars, stacked one after the other does nothing to maintain anything resembling a merg like a zip flow. What a joke. Trucks should be subject to lane control, especially at peak times. The only exception would be those coming up from Auckland ports as they have a huge hill to grind up thru. Don't know what it's like in south Auckland, but at the Greville and Constellation on ramps, it's bleeding obvious that the truck/bus thru lane is one of the major effects of congestion at those points. Been sitting on the motorway long enough to notice ... nFSE
