only if your car is tuned to use higher octane is it worth it, if your car is not it's just money out the pipe. Higher octane does not equal more btu's

There are no more BTU's in higher octane fuel, but economy & performance can be affected.

Under high compression (turbo, performance engines) a lower octane fuel mixture will auto ignite causing “knocking”
The knock sensor picks this up, the computer adjusts the engine to run smoothly without knocking on a lower octane fuel – by retarding the ignition.

Because of the retarded ignition, the engine produces less power - the fuel burn isn't as efficient - and fuel consumption increases slightly.

Too much "car talk" in this thread :P so I'll just say that I use my standard 6c discount at Caltex every time. I can't believe how much prices have dropped recently though; I filled up at 202.9 last week, then it was 199.9 on the weekend, and I passed the local Caltex a few minutes ago and it's down to 194.9!

geoffwnz: Remembering of course that you're only getting $1-$2 discount per tank with the 4c/l savings. Not huge on a per tank basis but you might save maybe $50-$100 per year if you are lucky.

I save about $500 per year using my AA card. Every two months I (almost) get a free tank of petrol. This is with about 2000 km of driving per month. There is a trick to multiplying your discount, but I'm not going to divulge it. I will leave it as a mathematical exercise for the reader. I have never seen anyone use an AA rewards card properly, except one friend and a few taxi drivers.

hardley pretty much all of them are designed for 91/95, only the performance orientated ones ie R models are designed for 100, even then they will run fine on 98. and they are a very small percentage of the market here.

you may get more milage out of 98, but does the extra cost over 95 justify it if you car doesnt need the extra octane? maybe 50km more a tank tops on 98 when it costs $5 more for 50L over 95 and $9.5 per L over 91.

worked out cheaper on 91 for both my cars and does no halm as thats what they are designed for

The best petroleum discount I have found is suggesting to my wife that she use my car when she goes out right at the time it needs the tank filled. I save heaps :)

OK, now you've told everyone the secret. It gets better if you link up several AA cards to the same account (wife and daughter).

it's amazing how many people don't do this. Take a look around the filling station and see how many people don't have $40 registered on the pump when they've finished.

well you don't know the real secret. you can put two lots of $40 on the pump before you need to pay.

that saves some people the 16km (plus start stop traffic plus/minus hills) to the nearest station by 200%.
