The Qashqai is also underpowered, regardless of whether you go with the petrol or diesel option.

If the qashqai is underpowered all other SUVs are severely underpowered to the point of not moving? I thought it had a 3.5L engine?

I just went through a similar process and ended up with the 2015 model Subaru Outback.

Forester much the same but more upright and a tad shorter if that suits better.

No, it is available with a 106kw petrol or 96kw diesel engine. You are clearly confusing it with something else.

engine size means nothing when it comes to power

Lol yes it does. Bigger means more, smaller does not mean less, when forced induction is present.

2l petrol and it's surprisingly good for 2l na and cvt. diesel option is 1.6, didn't test it, some say it runs a little rough - the european had the 1.4 which is said to be a more refined and mature diesel.

power/toque to curb weight ratio though, it's underpowered (2l petrol). the cvt does a good job to hide that fact, but still not a huge fan...
