Bung: The engine appears to use one belt from crankshaft to one camshaft and another belt coupling both camshafts. So 2nd belt is quite short. Smells complicated, if VW put a time limit as well as a km limit I'd follow their advice.

That would be a good idea if you lived in Europe where it can consistently get below zero during winter and cause alot more problems with belt shrinkage and cracks but we don't, I've always gone with the 100,000KM rule and never had one go bung yet

Would depend on the engine as to whether it is worth taking the risk. Some engines will totally break if the belt breaks. While others will just stop working, and once the belt is replaced, it will be fine. So I would research what happens if it breaks first. Some European ones have been known to fail prematurely anyway according to the dog and lemon.

With VW's I have found they love to have their balljoints replaced...there are many! .

Reminds me when I had a VW beetle nine million years ago, took it in for a warrant at a VW specialist place up on Taranaki St WN and was told it needed new ball joints, ok then do it. 6 months later, it needs new ball joints, whipped the previous receipt out of the glove box ( or more likely off the wet floor) and asked how come within 6 months. Sheepish oops will double check them, then, oh looks like they are fine after all. Last time I went there.
