dickytim: Holden Commodore wagon, but a low km VZ SS would be the pick.

Very long but mountains of boot space and a 5.7l V8 that is surprisingly economical.

Plus with a tune and exhaust you are easily pushing 450bhp and running 13 sec 1/4 miles all day every day.

My little yellow s4 can do 11s 1/4 miles and thats just a little v6 turbo :)
They are good cars the ol Holden but even though they may have 450HP when tuned they are still dead slow.

Geektastic: Volvo estate. It's the breeder's car of choice I believe - even comes with built in booster cushions these days!

I drove a BMW a few weeks back and i was staring at it confused when the back 2 seats were split in half like this.
Could still fit a baby seat in the middle there!

If you choose the right kind of seats you can fit three without too much issue.

Combinations that I have personally tested that work:

2 x Diono Ranier (forward facing) + 1 x Safe n Sound Unity (rear facing) in a 2009 Mazda 6
3 x Diono Radian (forward facing) in the Mazda 6 and a 2009 Ford Mondeo
2 x Diono Ranier + 1 x Diono Radian (all forward facing) in the Mazda 6

Combinations that do not work:

3 x Diono Ranier (forward facing) in the Mazda 6
2 x Diono Ranier + 1 x Safe n Sound Unity (all forward facing) in the Mazda 6

Radians were pretty much the slimmest on the market and will fit 3 across in a lot of 'medium' sized cars.

Be careful, as the Radian is now superseded by the Ranier, which is wider (and the extra width does make a difference). You can still buy the Radian but stock is harder to find.

I must say, I'm surprised by the love for the Aussie land barges of the Falcon and Commodore....

I would like a 5.7ss but I'm not sure I can sell the questionable performance figures to Mrs Dastardly..(hence my choice of an R36 - the wolf in sheep's clothing!)

For those who own one of the Aussie KM munchers - do you find them....I don't know....a little unrefined? I mean build quality aside compared to one of the Euro breeds, equipment levels and refinement appear to be lagging when comparing same age Aussie cars to their Euro cousins. Don't get me wrong, the latest Holden's and Fords have all the goodies, and in that way can now compete with Europe - But I don't have 70k to spend on a car!

I don't want no sugar in it - thank you very much

yep same size as a 5 series BMW externally and yet bigger internally... what does that tell you?

I've got a V6 accord and all critical internal dimensions are all within +-1 inch of the falcodores so there is plenty of scope of finding affordable big cars without going down the track of the big Ocker's

Ugggh.. I know they are supposed to be good cars, but I just can't get over the ones that we used to see in the eighties. We used to muse out loud whether it was worth writing off our own cars to get another Skoda off the road.
