Skoda are part of the VW-Audi group so they use many of the same parts you find in a VW. However, they are built in the Czech republic and from what I've seen, the build quality is not as good as VW.

Mind you, they are a bit cheaper, but in this case you get what you pay for.

Yes the main Skoda factory is in the Czech Republic, however this was a condition of the Czech government selling Skoda to VW and the factory was completely upspec'd by VW.

I'm on my second Skoda (Octavia RS) and they are fantastic cars, I've had less trouble with these two cars than with the Holden Commodore before them. The Octavia RS shares a lot with the Golf GTI (just 10-12k cheaper) but in my opinion are better platform car. Fully loaded with options, especially for the price!

There is probably so much I have missed. This is a new car and cost $24,000

"Front and rear fog lights" I hope she turns off the rear fog lights as those things are a real hazard on European and Korean cars in NZ. Maybe fine on the EU motorways in the fog but not in clear air of NZ..

This is extremely good value for $24k, but I was looking at the $50k Octavia RS. I've just had another look at the pricing sheet, and I would have added the following extras:

And I'm thinking that's not hill descent but to assist with hill starts.

Not bad specs for that price! I just couldn't purchase a Skoda based on the aesthetics alone - I just don't find a single model of theirs attractive, particularly the grill. I like the idea of the Octavia RS, though - a good balance of performance and economy at an ok price.

Earlier (ie pre-SkyActiv) Mazdas like the MPS you would have been looking at weren't that great on the features.

Mazda's current approach is different from that taken by the European makes - you can get the same features, but they're available through selecting the different grades as opposed to optioning each individual feature. This can come at a significant premium , eg the 6 Limited I've got was many thousands ($10k?) over the GSX to get the safety features I wanted (radar cruise control, rear traffic etc), for which I got stuff I didn't care so much about (19" alloys, leather seats etc) but of course had to pay for. And as for the 'premium' sound in the top Mazdas - let's just say it confirms my approach towards Bose equipment!

Just to be more on topic, several cars ago I bought a 6month old 106xsi (so it was a few years back) and it was one of those cars that fitted into the "most fun you can have with your pants on category" and it was an absolute go cart that provided miles and miles of fun motoring, however in the years after that the designs and driver engagement of the marque appear to have waned.

The previously noted Top Gear article I also recently saw whilst transiting the Tasman to see the MotoGP and Gold Coast 600, and that article sums up the current Peugeot marque to a tee.

Honestly, look at something else. While others here are recommending VAG product, I have aquaintances with current VAG product and no shortage of horror stories, DGT seems good, but has its issue, and costs.

But hey, who am I to talk, being an Alfa owner I should know about Euro reliability issues, but everytime I drive my Alfa, I get the biggest grin you ever saw, sadly my company Kia does not do the same.

Returning to the original topic ... we have had a 2002 Peugout 407 HDI Diesel for about ten years. Only one significant (>$1000) repair in that time. Abandoned Armstrongs (franchise dealer) many years ago. (Too expensive, and not sure about the level of specilised knowledge.)
Very nice to drive, very cheap to run - even with the RUCs and the extra servicing required for a diesel. A well tuned diesel is less poluting than a petrol engine.
That's our experience.

No it has hill desent as in drive down Ngauranga Gorge using no pedals, it also has hill start assist

My wife has a Peugeot 207, and it's a nifty little car. Got it cheap as it was a Jap import

Personally I drive Renault, and have been driving 3 different Renaults since 2008. Never had any issue.
French cars are really comfortable, I especially love the power steering.

No it has hill desent as in drive down Ngauranga Gorge using no pedals, it also has hill start assist

Hill descent control is limited to a max speed of 20-25km/h in 4WD vehicles to prevent sliding down a steep and/or slippery slope (where manually braking will lock the wheels, completely breaking traction and car slides with no control).

What you are describing is transmission downshifting beyond certain vehicle pitch to engage engine braking.
