Skoda are part of the VW-Audi group so they use many of the same parts you find in a VW. However, they are built in the Czech republic and from what I've seen, the build quality is not as good as VW.
Mind you, they are a bit cheaper, but in this case you get what you pay for.
Yes the main Skoda factory is in the Czech Republic, however this was a condition of the Czech government selling Skoda to VW and the factory was completely upspec'd by VW.
I'm on my second Skoda (Octavia RS) and they are fantastic cars, I've had less trouble with these two cars than with the Holden Commodore before them. The Octavia RS shares a lot with the Golf GTI (just 10-12k cheaper) but in my opinion are better platform car. Fully loaded with options, especially for the price!
