If I go less far for the same amount of fuel....I see that as decreased mileage. If people see it the other way, round I'm happy to add the appropriate words to adjust it. :-)

pretty much everyone has used L/100km

so the KM are staying the same as its measured over 100km its the amount of fuel that is changing

if it were Km/L then yes that would be correct

And then there's the YouTube videos where miles per gallon mean different amounts depending which side of the Atlantic you are on. At least a litre is 1000ml regardless of whether you spell it liter or litre.

I was incorrect with my Focus usage. When I checked the actual reading in the car out, it was a little better. Us 7.3 Official 6.7.

One thing I will say though is my petrol tank stays the same size, but my battery capacity reduces over time.

And then in boats there is nautical miles with US gallons.

2001 Mitsubishi Diamante wagon (3.5 V6). Not sure what is claimed, but round town it does between 13 and 14.4 L/100km. Open road it will do 8.5 - 9.5.

2013 Prius C (the smaller hatchback one), claimed 4.4 and does 4.4 L/100km just about anywhere. Great little car.

Speed is everything. You'll use at least 20% more fuel at 120kph than you will at 80kph.

You'll use more fuel driving into the wind (and make it even worse by driving into the wind fast).

For sure, and add "than you will at 50kph"

Drag squares with speed. Go twice as fast, you have 4 times as much drag from the wind.

Around town, mix of stop/start and longer light free runs, I can get under 10 easily. Steady driving. 50k, 60k, depending.

Wife gets more like 11+. Heavy pedal to get to 50k quick, on/off when driving at one speed, late braker

If I was at 50k, all steady, I get 6.

Not sure how the computer works but I was towing my trainer, reset the computer, and it gave me about 12, towing a load, steady speed, 50k.

Even small things, I think most modern cars cut the fuel when you remove throttle? Cut as in zero. So looking ahead to the lights, if you know it will be red, unthrottle sooner, save some gas. If it will turn green probably, unthrottle sooner, so you slow down slower, and have momentum for when its green. Small savings, but when rushing across town or taking your time will save F all, chill out and relax and take your time.

Mazda3 SP22 Limited, used mainly on open road.

Manufacturer states 5.2l/100km, actual over the last year is 6.3l/100km.

The actual figure above is calculated from my logbook - trip computers are not very accurate in my experience.

8.9 is good. Mine is all urban though. It's quite fun to get to 62 k back it off to let it change to 5th, and creep non stop
at 60k. Stay under 6, stay under 6!

So is ours lots of short trips, 6km drop the kids off 12km back to work in traffic than the reverse. Its also the weekend car so again small trips. When the wife was on maternity leave it went up to about 9.1l/100km as all she was doing was the short trip to daycare and back. Car barely had time to warm up

Prius-c -specs: Fuel consumption – 3.9L/100km (combined ADR 81/02)

Looks like I am the most frugal so far regardless exceeding the manufacturer's specs (Real AVE = 4.6L/100).

By the way it is fact that in Moscow and in USA there are plenty of evidence of underfuellig (i.e. stealing from you at the pump by miscalibrating fuel pump metering).

I have no proof about NZ, but yours and mine examples make me thinking that some might not blame "foot" but rather someone'e hands fiddling with the pump's meters.... :-(

P.S. I saw many times compliance officers coming to a pump overseas with calibrated canisters and checking the pump meters. NEVER saw that happening in New Zealand. Why?

Any IT geeks on this forum in charge of pump meters? Can swear those are robust, trusted, can't be hacked?

I saw TV episode overseas where the meter was remotely controlled (back to norm) when compliance officer was coming to check...

I don't actually know what it should do.
I can get the it into the 5's if I'm being inconsiderate to other road users.
I do about 40,000k per year.
But if I have my mountainbike on the towbar mounted rack it adds over a litre per 100k!

I'm amazed at some of these numbers... I drive a 21 year old V8 sedan that weighs over 2.1 tonne.

I have a heavy workboot, and like to let as many people through a set of traffic lights as possible, if I'm in the front, if you get my drift.

I also have to deal with Adelaide commuter traffic (I can get to work in 20 minutes, but sometimes takes an hour to get home), and I live on a hill. Work is not on that hill. That means at least 5 times a week, I'm travelling up the stupid thing.

Trip computer currently sitting on 12.4ltrs per 100kms.

I expect it to go up with my new job, but when I used to work in the same area, it was 13.3ltr / 100ks.

On a road trip (once out of Adelaide hills), 8.3 is easy to the Vic border at 110kph (the speed limit)

Edit: Trip computer is very accurate.. It will tell you fuel usage per second if you want, and knows how much fuel is in either of the tanks to a decimal point per tank. German precision. :D

Clearly it is neither a BMW X5 or AMG E55. Those precision German machines lose more fuel than the Exxon Valdez
