The world is full of idiots.Why assume none of them will be behind the wheel? I don't care who is right. I care who is alive, namely, me. My dad taught me defensive driving and I am eternally grateful to him for it. Defensive driving means constantly anticipating what can go wrong and being prepared for it. I think the truck driver was a dick but I would have been slowing down anyway. If he wants to cut me off that badly, he can have it. Karma will take care of him.

Afraid to say I pretty much agree with this 100% - the truck driver was a total dick and in the wrong IMO, but from that video I probably would have started braking when I saw him drifting into the middle lane just in case he did exactly what he did. Then given him a good blast with the horn. Then possibly overtaken him when safe and flipped him off ;-) Sorry, not trying to be a dick or anything, and it's always easier to say that sort of thing in hindsight as an armchair driver, but after many years driving in Auckland I've learned to expect the worst of people. (I've also driven across a fair bit of europe and still think overall auckland has more idiots on the road lol)

That sort of unsafe behaviour needs to be stopped. It wouldn't hurt to send a copy to Harkers; you might also suggest they check the visibility of the registration plate and colour of the turn indicator.

Hah, true that - I used to work up there and drive that stretch of motorway everyday (though before the layout all changed) - it's a large part of the reason I've learned to assume the worst of many Auckland drivers - in particular their willingness to cut straight across two lanes of motorway at low speeds...

Is this the south-bound on-ramp at Greville Rd, Albany ? If so, the truck has come on from a Truck / T3 on-ramp, straight across to the right -lane.

This is a common occurrence, and many drivers bust their guts to get to that super fast outside lane as fast as damn possible !!! See this at many on-ramps ... That right indicator is flashing furiously as they get to that outside lane in about 10 meters after merging into the motorway ..

1 - Truck driver showed very poor driving skills. Maybe he underestimated OP's speed, didn't see OP in mirror, or possibly believes in might has rights?

2 - OP appears to be driving too fast for conditions. Didn't slow down as truck came across. Should have been anticipating the possibility of vehicles entering his lane.

3 - Truck indicator looks like it is rather dull. Very easy to miss on video.

4 - What "fast" lane? NZ doesn't have fast and slow lanes, just lanes. It is recommended to use the left lane, but it is not compulsory. The vehicle in the right lane may be getting ready to exit to the right from that lane. Designated passing lanes are different, vehicles must be in the left lane unless passing.

Keeping left is more than a recommendation.
Road User Rules
"2.1Keeping left
(1)A driver, when driving, must at all times drive as near as practicable to the left side of the roadway unless this rule otherwise provides.
(2)If a driver's speed, when driving, is such as to impede the normal and reasonable flow of traffic, that driver must, as soon as is reasonably practicable, move the vehicle as far as practicable to the left side of the roadway when this is necessary to allow following traffic to pass.
(3)A driver may drive in the right lane in the direction of travel when driving on a multi-lane road if—
(a)the driver is turning right, or making a U-turn from the centre of the road, and is giving the prescribed signal of that driver's intention to turn right; or
(b)the driver is passing; or
(c)the left lane is unavailable to the driver; or
(d)the driver is required by any provision of this rule to drive in the right lane; or
(e)a variable lane control downward-facing arrow sign indicates that the driver must drive in the right lane; or
(f)the driver is avoiding an obstruction; or
(g)the traffic in all other lanes is congested; or
(h)the traffic in every lane is congested."

The truck is at fault because of the illegal lane change. In the case of a rear end collision it is usually deemed to be the vehicle that is at the rear to be at fault because it is careless driving if you are following the vehicle in front to close. But in this case you were not following that vehicle and you already occupied that lane.
