the giant reign 2 last year's model is better than this year's ... only just though

Last years model being 2016, as the 2017 is now available. Or did you mean 2015 as last years model ?

Giant Reign 2 2016 (the one with the mighty RockShox Pike) is on clearance ... I bought one ... :) Thing is, you have to pick it up from the store ... It's against Giant T&C to ship.

It doesn't work very well in very tight technical bits but everything else you'll have so much fun. And if you find you don't want it sell it for profit :) Guarantee you'll have no trouble selling an Enduro bike with a RS Pike thanks to the new adventure park. [2nd hand market is generally about 20-30% off 1 year old bikes]

That's a great deal. I'm not that flush and was looking to use Interest free offers.

A RS Pike on its own retails for circa $2000 .... so in essense buy a RS Pike get a free bike. You will need a "small" most bikes with "modern geometry".

I think if I were to buy a mountain bike I would start off with a relatively decent frame that was compliant with the broadest range of after-market parts and met my geometry/size/usage requirements. If i were looking at shocks, I would probably opt for ones that were easy to rebuild and adjust for different usages.

The mountainbike industry unfortunately is quite immature still. There have been so many "standards" in even the last 20 years that there is a very real chance of buying a bike now, and then newer parts not being compatible.

In the last ten years the big changes have been:

Wheel size 26", 650B, and 29" (559mm 584mm and 622mm)

Forks, 1 1/8th straight steerer, 1.5 straight steerer, and finally 1.5-1 1/8th tapered steerer (which seems to have won)

Bottom bracket/crank interface, too many to mention

Hub width, 135mm quick release, 150mm bolt through, 142, 142+, 148mm (this is just for rear wheels), front has gone from 9mm quick release and 20mm, to 15mm.

Handlebar diameter, 25mm, then 31mm ish, and up to 35mm

Rear shocks, honestly your imagination is the limit.

But having said all this, if you buy something like a Reign, Trance or that Merida, and you look after it, there's no reason it won't last a decade. I change parts more out of upgradeitis rather than breaking a part and replacing it (wearing out chains etc aside).
