That isn't practical at intersections like Greenlane East and Great South Road. Each lane has an arrow indicating what direction is acceptable...and in one case there are two RH turn lanes. But if you only go in the leftward lane of the two, you're clogging the lane that wants to go onto the motorway northbound...and impeding your own progress if you want to be in right lane after the turn to proceed through the roundabout and onward toward Remuera. People who know the intersection stay left for the motorway and right to avoid the motorway and cross it instead.....along with the usual twats who slow EVERYONE down (including themselves) by queueing on the right and then try to cut in to the queue on the left for the on-ramp. Their tyres should go instantly flat for being idiots.

Its amazing how easy it is to miss those people who are in the wrong lane trying to push in at the front of the queue when you are busy sorting out the coin collection in the ash tray or trying to alphabatize the presets on the stereo. Shame that sometimes they cant get in and end up having to go all the way around the roundabout and join the other queue of people.

Challenge: Somewhere I'm sure it used to state that it was illegal to drive with only your parking lights on. Some people do this as an intermediary when they're too shy perhaps to turn on their headlights.

Also, fog lights:

8.4Use of optional lights

(1)A driver may use a fog lamp only in conditions of severely reduced visibility, including fog or snow, but not under clear atmospheric conditions even during the hours of darkness.

Pretty sure that's not mentioned in the Road Code for example.

I live past here and I can tell you that people who need to turn right into Riverhead *need* to get over early (even if they are going slow) otherwise they will be carved up by people who don't merge back in soon enough from the passing lane. IMO this passing lane should stop well short of where it does, it is dangerous. The worst part is that over the blind crest at the top, cars can be *stopped* waiting to turn right. If I need to overtake here (ie. a truck) I do it early and get back in.

I agree absolutely its a horrible location for it given the turnoff.

I suspect at this point even if it was shortened it would make no difference however.

I also have however never actually seen a case where someone has merged in late and caused such a dangerous situation along that spot. In the event that it did happen, it is very clear who was in the wrong however...

You are correct, this changed I think about 1990. At the same time they changed the law that you were not able to park with your headlights on. Now it is just your headlights on full beam.

Don't get me started about Fog lights... some seem to think you can use them as daylight running lights. You can't!

So how do you tell the difference? There are two ways, Fog lights and daylight running lights have different IOC symbols

so if your car has them you can check.

The other way is to look for the approval number on the lens. If the number includes the letters DL... guess which one it is?

If they are the aliexpress ones then you have little to worry about as the LEDs will be dead in no time.

But most I have seen tend to be sold as worklights and similar and are for truck beds and offroading use and stuff.

1) Take the left lane and straight away get to 100km/hr in the left lane after driving between 75-85 for the previous 10km

It is a psychological thing, when the road gets wider, it feels like you are going slower so people speed up. But, without question they are rude ignorant drivers and simply do not deserve a license.

2) Take the right lane and sit at 90km/hr WTF????

Again, a case of ignorance and being rude.

3) Do a slow overtake at 101km/hr, by the time they have done their overtaking the lane has run out.

Problem is, cops will often sit at the end of a passing lane for some easy scores. But, in saying that, people should go the tolerance.

I can add

-- Drivers who tow a trailer or caravan and can't be bothered slowing every so often to let following traffic pass. I drove with a trailer between the coromandel and BOP over summer and frequently pulled to the left and slowed down to let people pass ... probably cost me less than 5 minutes for the entire trip.

-- cops who rarely enforce slow driver rules.

-- Campervans -- 15 years ago these were fairly rare, but are now everywhere. Foreign drivers simply cannot drive on NZ roads. People who say foreigners are great drivers seem oblivious to how badly they drive on our roads.

-- Most of our intercity roads -- they are truly awful, little better than goat tracks and in other countries would only be deemed suitable for 50-80kph limits.

What are drivers thinking driving around in the daylight with their fog lights on? Quite often fog lights are badly adjusted and blinding oncoming drivers. Headlights on are perfectly OK if you want to be more visible and are subject to WOF checks....

It's been a while since I travelled thru that intersection, but are those two right turn lanes ( heading for the motorway) signposted for either the motorway exit or Remuera ?

It's all very well turning right to head towards the motorway, but how would you know which lane to turn right from if you are heading to the motorway, especially if the traffic is backed up ?

Locals and frequent travellers would know the correct lanes, but infrequent users, or out of towners would have a problem knowing which.

I don't mind the front fogs lights so much, but it is the really bright red rear ones on euro cars that bug me. It's like these people have seen the Audis with their white LED DRLs and want some of that bling so they've turned all this stuff on because it looks cool. It doesn't.

You are correct, this changed I think about 1990. At the same time they changed the law that you were not able to park with your headlights on. Now it is just your headlights on full beam.

It was never a rule. It was only, just as today, during the legal hours of darkness that you weren't allowed to drive with only your position marker lamps on. And all you had to do when stopping was ensure your headlights were dipped.

I don't understand people who drive with their park lights on. If you are concerned about visibility, why not put your headlights on? You won't get a power bill ...

Rear fog lamps .... fantastic deterrent for night-time tail-gaters.
