One of the better aspects of F&P actually, we've had this for several appliances.

F&P repairs are great. Low cost parts especially.   I had to replace a broken freezer bin once, was thinking they'd charge 100 bucks or something... from memory it was like $10.

Their onsite deal repairs are reasonable too, they charge a one-off fee regardless of hours worked.

I wonder how long that will be the case for with all the cheap imported brands flooding in, reducing the number of f&p being sold.

I'd love to see a current breakdown of the costs of a car built using spare parts!

I posted about this earlier, something i noticed in an aussie newspaper, and the australian commerce commission (or equivalent) was looking into it.

Here is the article...

Also the Commerce Commission may choose to take action against Toyota (in this case) and that may be enough to scare other brands into following suit.

"The Commerce Commission said the decision raised some interesting issues that it would consider."

They're clearly outraged - and about to go nuclear

/s  (not holding my breath that they'll do anything much at all - car parts and service rorts as reported by other posters in this thread aren't something new).

Given the very high margin obtainable and the risk that if the Commerce Commission did prosecute - which would be unusual in that case IMO, as it's just price gouging and not "deceptive" - then they'd probably just get a stern telling off at worst, I expect the car companies will just keep doing what they've been doing.

Reporter on that story should do a follow-up in a few weeks, and see if anything has changed.

The seem to have limited resources though. A pity they don't get more money and resources.

Toyota NZ acting unethically? Tell me something I don't know.

Ask me why it took several attempts over 14 years to finally get an imported Lexus (bought it new in HK) on the road in NZ.

Why did it take 14 years to get it on the road. Seriously I would be interested to know.

FWIW - It's amazing what obscure super-specific parts you can get from Aliexpress.

The cost is so high because normally people dont pay, their insurance is paying.

Yup there are all sorts on there , I just picked up a Bluetooth wiring loom for $25 where they wanted $165 from the dealer.

You can also get things a lot cheaper even on eBay.

Anywhere is worth looking instead of paying for such inflated dealer prices.

Yeah, I think there's something in that. Much like the cost of actually paying to have glass replaced, given most seem people to have coverage for glass breakage (particularly car glass) covered by insurance. A friend had one of those small rear windows (behind the back passenger doors) smashed by an idiot - it cost him in the hundreds to have replaced, and certainly more than the difference in cost between having third party and full insurance on the car!

I reckon panel beating charges are similarly over-inflated due to most work being done under insurance.

Sounds like the scam that the medical and insurance industries run in the USA. A person paying a medical bill pays *much* *much* more than an insurance company has to pay for the same procedure.

So people are virtually forced into having medical insurance.

I know that Mazda don't do replacement keys for the MPV. My neighbor found out the hard way. They lost one of the two credit card size keys and you can't get replacement  keys to be re-programmed for the existing car. They spent $2000 to have a new transponder unit, two new keys and rendering the one existing key useless.

There insurance company would not pay out for the replacement because the keys did not have any 'identification markings' i.e. telephone/name etc. WTF!!!

I spoke to my own insurance company ( AMI ) said that they would pay for the 'lost key(s)' if I ever lost my own MPV keys. BUT i would lose my no claim discount, despite having 'AMI freeBmax No Claim Bonus protection'

This is pretty sad, really. Toyota NZ are one of the leading corporations in this area but all manufacturers stop making a majority of genuine parts for their cars within five years or so. I'm surprised the complaint was upheld since a third party solution for the Estima is cheaply available in NZ. If I were the manager of Armstrong's I would have sourced a third party solution for this guy if he made a complaint.

they might get into bigger trouble with corporate HQ if they supplied third party solutions...

Toyota's reply actually gave me a chuckle or two being a bit too honest...

It said it reviewed its pricing of parts regularly and set prices with reference to cost, competitive pressure and other factors.

cost - it is what it is

competitive pressure - none, zilch, zero, nada!

other factors - are you still asking when I've fully answered the pricing strategy? Fill this bit in you imbecile!

Ultimately I think we just have too many layers in NZ, and costs stack up. If we have less dealerships, less garages, less parts distribution warehouses, surely the efficiency would drive down the cost.
