Lucky you didn't live next to me about 10 years ago. I started work at 5.45am in Wellington... And lived in Kapiti.

I rode a 97 Ducati SS. It had carbies, so needed to warm a little.

I'd wheel it out of the garage, shut the garage, start it, put my helmet and gloves on and then leave. About 5am.

I asked the neighbours many times if it bothered them, but they were all good about it.

Come to think of it, it's still the latest model vehicle I've ever owned.

These days I've been at work for at least an hour at 7.45.

Nice! Mines only a 656 gixxer, but I still get the mandatory nod from other bikers!

Nice! Mines only a 656 gixxer, but I still get the mandatory nod from other bikers!

I've got a Ducati Hypermotard 821 with Termignoni exhaust. The baffles are in the garage on a shelf where they belong :-D

Hearing car alarms going off as I pass still brings a smile to my dial.

Doesn't really bother me, I only hear it if I'm awake otherwise sleep through it as it's across the road.

The one that does annoy me is the douchebag Subaru WRX owner that works weird hours, not only is their exhaust obnoxiously loud but they also beep when they leave the house.

Because I'm sure the occupant in the house didn't hear the exhaust so luckily you beeped to let them know you're leaving...

Mine use to spit and fart flames when I rolled off the throttle when cold... Loved it :D

It never had baffles either... When I took the "mufflers" off to polish the aluminium, I just put a steel rod straight thru the middle to hold one end in a vice. They were empty.

My weekend was shattered on several occasions by groups of bikers roaring down the road with machines that sounded like the race bikes at Donnington Park - very intrusive for a public road. They could clearly be heard even 5 minutes later in the distance.

There is certainly a high number of very loud motorbikes in the South Wairarapa over any given weekend.

It's best to let it run with no load for as little time as possible when cold - it takes forever to reach operating temperature and during that time the high clearances due to the differing expansion rates of differing metals actually accelerate wear, not reduce it. 10 seconds after a cold start the oil has circulated and the bike should be ridden off at a leisurely pace being careful to neither excessively labour nor rev the engine until it it up to normal temperature which with a properly functioning cooling system is about 10 minutes.

Oh I dunno about engine wear.

If you go to a bike wreckers, they don't seem to have a lot of bikes with broken engines and perfect everything else.

I never understood the loud pipe thing. Drove me crazy riding loud bikes.

The bikestore I used to get my harley worked on decided to debaffle my bike one day.. It drove me nuts.. Ended up with a cycleshack replacement, was still noisy but didnt shake the house anymore. Im sure the neighbours hated me going to the gym early mornings. It could set off car alarms at 100 paces! Never had issues getting warrants even though it was guaranteed to be way over the noise limits.

My current bike (cbr600) has an arrow exhaust system and to me its very quiet, never lets off alarms etc. My girlfriends mother bitched at how noisy it was though the other day when I left their house - I dont think its noisier than my last bike, just a deeper sound.

I came to the conclusion years ago loud pipes just give you headaches :)

My 250 is pretty much a straight pipe with IXIL Hyperflow on the end. It's a menace, but the joy it brings with every ride is worth it. I ride a Z300 now with just a slipon Akra, its better sounding then stock but not stupid loud. I dont think I will be going for a cat delete.

My last bike was a Guzzi Lemans II . Was new - so that's a long time ago. That was quite loud but with helmet on never a problem to me anyway. Like Ducati 900ss, was like sweet music. The typical jappa 4s of the time sounded like sewing machines.

My DRZ400SM is overly loud, I prefer I that way as a lot of the time people hear me coming as I "filter" through traffic and open the gap more ... plus it sounds hilarous in the Civic car park :-)

Thats me. I read somewhere, maybe my manual, it takes 7km to warm up fully. So, a quick idle, then potter away is I feel better than idling forever

Ouch!! Mines a 4 in line, jappa, but its smooth as silk vibration-wise. Not loud, 656cc , 90 odd HP. No sewing machine, although the Ninja 250 I got, also new, was a SM. I got back into bikes with that, and yep, it was traded in at 2200km
