BMW 5series.

TradeMe 540i

But if it was me... 740Li

That 740Li looks soo good! The KMs are a bit high, but with their kind of maintenance, it should still be pretty good!

A $5k one and have a few months of not working. That's pretty much how I do it - but I paid $3600 about 10 years ago instead of $5000.

Does it need to be a car?

With a motorbike, you can shorten that commute time. You can feel some freedom (and pay higher rego fees). Somebody here on GZ has a signature that states "Four wheels move the body, two wheels move the soul". In my experience, that is very true.

I'd rather not kill myself  (and not because i'll crash, but because the wife would kill me if I bought a motorbike)

Talkiet:

$20k will buy you an average to reasonable lotus 7 replica which realistically is a sunny day only car and not practical for anything but A-A motoring... But it'll be more fun than anything else at that price.

For a usable fun car, The 370Z is a great choice, and very occasionally you see Fiat 500 Abarths near that price... My next car is going to be a 500 Abarth.

Cheers - N

quite like the look of the 370Z

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/nissan/auction-1287140869.htm

2009,  85k kms, $23500 (which I could maybe barter down to $21k, as it's a private sale, which is close enough  to $20k)

This is also fairly sexy looking IMHO, if quite a bit bigger than the 370Z

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/mercedesbenz/auction-1289138244.htm

Mercedes Benz  CLS 550,  2008, 70,000kms.

...and talking of Mercs

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/mercedesbenz/auction-1310924427.htm

E55 Kompressor AMG for under $20k, and under 100k kms.

such an amazing car  (and probably insane to maintain too!)

Cheapest Civic in town o.n.o.

Only 6k less than retail price.

Honda never sells their car below retail.

So that's 20% less than new price, 6 month old car, 4.5 years of warranty left on it, and it is listed o.n.o.

My brother has a civic with similar specs, and I didn't find it a great car to drive. Underpowered too I found, esp on hill driving. But that is comparing it to a mazda 3, which has more zip to it and good road control.

He also brought his second hand with about a year on it, and 10k on the clock, and think he got about 8k off the new price. They are reasonably reliable cars though, being a Honda. Not sure if Hondas way of pricing really protects the second hand value of the vehicle that much.

Those are some pretty nice cars listed there @NonprayingMantis! The order in which you listed them would be my choice of purchasing out of those three!

@joker97 That's probably why the retail prices are already pretty decent. $42k for a top spec Honda Civic NT Turbo.

@mattwnz I tested out the latest Honda Civic RS Turbo last year and IMO thought it was a pretty decently powered car! Was surprised when it was only 1.5L but it is powered by a turbo. Virtually no lag too!

Re Matthew haha thanks. Good to know. I've driven behind them a lot and man they make me go wow with their space age lighting. But now I can put that to rest haha. But most NA petrol 4 pots are like that. I wish they made manual V8s nowadays.

If you had a $20k budget to buy a car, what would you buy?

(I'm looking for ideas - it doesn't need to be family friendly, and not too worried about running costs - so a V8 is temping)

2008-2010 VE SS-V would prefer station wagon but  sedan at that price!

$20,500 got me this about a month ago.

I'm loving it.  It goes weill, it's comfortable, it's good decent tech and (I think) it looks beautiful.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

E36 M3, Wont find a car more fun. You could also snap up an E46 M3. Thats the best bang for buck you can get in a performance car over here and still look flash and not cost yourself a huge expense in maintenance as long as you get one with good history and NZ New.

E90 (Staywag, Coupe, 330I goes very well and is a great engine/drivetrain. Minimal issues with these cars.

370Z Nissan, see where your budget falls in that market place. Cool little quick cars! Use a heap more gas the the BMWs tho and they would be equally as fast and corner better and have less cabin noise and more comfortable.

Nissan Leaf if you can be bothered with the recharging and draw backs around that. maybe a good car if you cruise around the city all day.

Dont buy a turbo Audi/VW/Skoda. They are junk that has endless leaks and problems that require the engine to be removed to fixed.

What do you think about the 2006 + BMW 320i, 323i, 325i etc.? There's mixed views (on the internet) whether they leak and break down or not.

\

Everything leaks and breaks down at some point in its life, You cant elude the fact rubber goes brittle and metals expand and contract.
If you see a relatively new vehicle that leaks you can be sure that the owner didnt give 2 stuffs about it and never did preventative maintenance.

320I is a shocking engine, The N42 can go die.
Any BMW straight six is the go. go for the 325 if you can.
Excellent car, Get a NZ new please, No Jap-Crap...

Why no Jap import? NZ New would make it more expensive would it not?

NZ New BMW's and audis due to the media systems are region specific. They use Nissan (Jatco) gearboxes which are the worst this planet has ever seen.
You want NZ New for EVERY european car you buy. Unless your exporting something specific from japan etc. We did with a B8.5 S4. Was fully optioned past the spec of what we can get here.
Dont worry about how many kms its done. My old girl has smashed 215KMs so far and you wouldnt think its done more than 100.

That 7 series D T H i see around every day.

What about a BMW such as this? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-1187829298.htm

Looks like a great nifty car and even takes 7k off your budget!
