There is now an Allied in Petone which has meant cheaper fuel there.

I normally get my petrol from Pak N Save now. It's typically around 3-4 cheaper than everybody else for 95, and you then get 6cpl off just for buying anything.

I needed petrol on Thursday and on Wednesday noticed the price went from 2.019 to 2.049

On Thursday however the price was back to 2.019

Feels like some fuel company tested their luck with a price rise and no one else took it

Yes, I do wonder if they try it on, but they should look at the math. Say they sold 3000 litres in 8 hours, that is only $90 extra. How much more might they have made if they got more custom at the old price?

In Tauranga, Mobil on Chapel St always used to be first to put up their prices when BP was opposite them, they would both be the first and most expensive in Tauranga. Now BP has gone due to the Tamaki Drive/Harbour Bridge extensions, that Mobil is now one of, if not the cheapest, in Tauranga.

Wednesday was a 10c discount day, IIRC. I've seen this before... the day before a 10c discount, they put the price up. A couple of days later it comes down again.

Incidentally, just before long weekends is a good time for 10c discounts.

Wednesday was a 10c discount day, IIRC. I've seen this before... the day before a 10c discount, they put the price up. A couple of days later it comes down again.

Incidentally, just before long weekends is a good time for 10c discounts.

Wednesday - BP, Thursday - Caltex and Monday (29/5) - BP again

On Thursday I went to Caltex (only two in Dunedin) and paid $2.019 less 10c discount (saved $4 ish on 41 litres)

I noticed on Saturday and Sunday that petrol prices were, ~181.5 with the standard 6 cents off and then BP had a 10 cents off on Monday but the price increased to 185.6.

There seriously needs to be an inquiry into why there is such a change in the market as it is really obvious that they are gaming the system by being able to change prices so often.

especially too when prices have been trending down the last 3 months, about a $5 per barrel drop in price since Feb, so fluctuating the price up is obviously just a damage limitation exercise. Brings us back to the arguments that they should just do away with all the gimmicks and give us the best price possible, and setting it for atleast a week would be good too. If a garage cocks it up and escalates too high on a Sunday night, they miss out all week, whilst the one that takes the gamble on a lower or same price for the week, wins, and so do we. If only it were that simple.

There is a standard price already - it's called the national price.

As for regulation that would breach the Commerce Act and would require some pretty significant law changes. it would also likely deliver absolutely no benefit to end consumers.

There is a standard price already - it's called the national price.

As for regulation that would breach the Commerce Act and would require some pretty significant law changes. it would also likely deliver absolutely no benefit to end consumers.

FWIW, prior to Roger Douglas, the price of motor fuel was regulated.

You gotta remember we were better off before all this supermarket discount nonsense came in.

Yes the prices have actually gone up.

I do work the smartfuel deals properly. So i do actually maximise my savings. I prefer to use BP gas when possible. I NEVER got ANYTHING out of my onecard from countdown before, so now at least i am getting a few extra cents off the already overpriced petrol.

Z is expensive. Airpoints are barely worth anything to me.

I was over in Brisbane last week, and paid $1.16/l for unleaded 94 octane fuel. It was quite interesting, as when i drove down the M1 to byron bay, as soon as I hit NSW, the price shot up by about 30 cents. I am guessing it is a "State" tax that has been applied to these fuels.

But in my opinion I think most of the fuel in NZ is reasonably highly taxed.

We all know its the Trucks that do 90% of the damage to the roads, yet diesel cars are taxed at about $0.065c per km. Electric cars pay nothing for road upkeep.

Its not an issue now, but it will be in the future.

On the original note, lets keep a tally of the 10C days at caltex and bp, see if there is a trend?

Down here in Morrinsville Countdown doesn't give out fuel discounts but New World seems to always give 6c off. Interesting the local Mobil station gives you 6c off if you buy of $40 of fuel regardless.

darylblake I did notice when I was in the Goldcoast about a year and a half ago that the price would vary by up to 30c / liter as you drove around and also day by day the price would change a lot...

'straya run on daily pricing models from raw market costs (Queensland at least). You have to watch the pumps. It may go up 1-2c a day for 4 days of the week then plummet 10-15 on another

Countdown fuel discounts are now on Smartfuel (and have been for the past year or so) so they don't give out dockets.

I really don't know why Z bothered signing with Air New Zealand. You'd have to be pretty thick now to shop at Z for Airpoints earn, or even shop at Z at all unless you were a hardcore Fly Buys fanboi.

They've offered no Airpoints fuel discounts for months despite offering near continual 6c Fly Buys discounts. Factoring in their fuel already being more expensive and no 6c automatic discount like every other chain you're basically going to be spending $5 or so more per fill compared to every other station just to get 50c back in Airpoints Dollars. That's not a good ROI in my book.
