What if someone has a breakdown in the middle of the tunnel? I see no room on the sides, but I also know that you're not supposed to stop in there either...

what if someone breaks down on the harbour bridge when its 3 lanes in one direction? what if someone breaks down through parts of spaghetti junction? Newmarket flyover?

its really a moot point. the tunnel is full of cameras, and im sure like the harbour bridge they will have a team of people there if someone did breakdown, that will go to their rescue.

Fulton Hogan and NZTA have response teams 24/7 stationed across the motorway for these sort of events. Every seen a breakdown on the motorway? Generally 2-3 attenuator trucks with in minutes then police and tow truck very close behind.

I wonder if Fulton Hogan and NZTA were also the ones who planned the eastbound closure between Patiki and Grt N Rd on the NW Mway (the approaches to the new tunnel) this morning (overnight actually). It diverted traffic off at Patiki and along Rosebank Rd. However a huge section of Rosebank Rd was down to one lane with stop/go men while they dug up and resealed it. So even at 4.30 in the morning the traffic was backed up. Just a case of PPP on the part of FH and NZTA. Combined with the most user unfriendly information system on what's open and what's not, it is very frustrating, and even when the tunnel opens the other works on the network will still suffer the same problems.
I hope they enjoyed the colourful feedback I gave them on the on-the-move website when I got to work.

I broke down on the harbour bridge, fortunately it was a sunday afternoon, the motorway patrol car came in about 10 minutes and pushed us over and we rolled into the nearest service station to wait for the aa.

Generally their depots which is quite close to the motorway onramps all over auckland. They can use bus lanes etc so makes it easier.
The only ones stationed on the motorway grounds is the harbour bridge control AFAIK.

I couldnt tell you where as i would be giving out confidential customer data..

Rat run? Going to Penrose for instance, I always went via New Lynn and along that way, then up Mt Smart rd etc.

Never a traffic hassle.

As for motorways, when they did the Lincoln Rd part I emailed and said how will it help when there is still ONBE lane along Lincoln Rd to the motorway? They dismissed it....in fact they emailed each other and accidently cced me in, and I know they dismissed it.

Now it's a total stand still every day, all the way back, and all along Universal drive. Apparently they now are thinking of widening Lincoln Rd.

It never ends, there's 850 more every day into Auckland, has been for the last 2 years. Add in all those cars too, and well, it just fills up instantly, the minute a new bit is open.

On the plus side, getting back from the airport, via New Lynn should improve as everyone else uses the new bit and we can continue to use the old bit....:-)

Rat Run because the tunnel starts at Carrington and ends at Maioro St in Mt Albert (or vice versa) and at the moment the traffic that will use the tunnel between those two points, clogs those roads. Including huge trucks that have no business being on the narrow suburban roads.

I often have to use the route you describe when all the @#&$! motorways are closed at night.

If involved in an accident they say turn on your radio and wait for instructions. Is that a specific frequency or something different?

Most (if not all) mainstream radiostations are rebroadcast (so you can continue listening while driving through the tunnel) and all these can be 'over-written' and injected with the PA system announcements so drivers can receive instructions from the tunnel operators through their car radios on their favourite station.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

But still no opening date.
Must be close though as the permanent signs are all up (covered with tape) and half the barriers are gone (replaced by cones). I thought for one fanciful moment it might have been this weekend, if not then hopefully by next. Which would be a delay of exactly 3 months.
The family walked though the time last weekend. The thing that took my attention straight away was the speed camera positioned halfway down the entrance road on the south eastern end of tunnel. I wonder if that's how they plan to pay for the it?

School holidays are July 3rd to 20th. That should be a nice slow start for the tunnel.

I'm thinking the major trucking will take a bit longer to adjust their routes after the actual opening.

Traffic projects can win and lose elections these days. NZ election end of September.
