One good trick with a smart phone is to have more than one navigation program on it.
I have Google Maps which is a great app, but uses data unless I downloaded the right mapping areas in advance. I can use WiFi at a BP to download maps if I need to.
I also have Mapfactor Navigator with the entire NZ map stored on my SD card and I update that map every month. This is a free app with free maps and has never used any data of my phone, I only update from WiFi. It cost me nothing to have this on my phone and it works even in areas with no reception.
I have several other navigation apps that offer different things (geocaching capabilities, off-road mapping, saving routes, PlugShare app to tell me where the fast chargers are for my EV, etc. I use what works best for what I want to do.
I use Ram Mounts hardware on my motorcycles to mount my cellphone where it is easy to see, my phone is water resistant and has high enough brightness and contrast to be seen easily in full daylight. I just got a Ram Mount suction cup so I could use my existing phone holder and Ram Mount arm while in the car. In the car I can hear the instructions through the car stereo thanks to the wonders of bluetooth.
Last year I rode my motorcycle from the Waikato to Bluff & back (with two motorcycle rallies along the way) over 2 weeks, over 2,200km of riding. I had never been to Dunedin, Invercargill or Bluff before but my phone seemed to know the way to everywhere I wanted to go, it made a great riding companion. One thing that I really like about navigation apps compared to using a paper map is that I can have a continuous update for how many kms are remaining to my destination, which helps with fuel or battery range anxiety.
