Bung: A short while back the TM forum had the saga of a 4007 Peugeot with a $30k quote for a new gearbox. Autosure had okayed the repair but would only contribute $10k. Never did find out if dealer coughed for rest.

Sounds like nonsense to me. The 4007 was a badge engineered Mitsubishi Outlander, so there is no way a new transmission would cost anywhere near that much.

My Audi S4 had a quote for a new gearbox out of Germany for $24K (6 Speed ZF 4WD with diff in the egarbox), Engine was over 80K for the long block...

Not hard just to dump the value of the gearbox from the parts catalogue and call it a day.
CVT's I wouldn't presume are cheap.

The 4007 in question was a PSA diesel with a dual clutch gearbox not Mitsubishi. The only Peugeot option was a replacement trans rather than parts. Ignoring the idea that a low km dodgy trans doesn't make any secondhand one seem like a good choice there was some opinion that maybe a Ford Mondeo could contribute the required parts.

We purchased the car in 2012 from one of the manufacturers dealers. Car was a Japanese import built in 2009. Aside from the NZ dealer, we were the first NZ owner.

I think that the car is actually a Toyota. One of the "signature class" imports that Toyota call them. As Im not aware of any other new car brand that imports Japan used cars which are then sold through their new car dealership network.

@kiwiharry - Could you please say how many Kilometres the car had done when you bought it, and how many it is on currently?

@Aredwood - Car had done 38,000km when we purchased it. It is now at 134,000km, so close to 20,000km per year after purchase.

I'm probably out of date, but $3k sounds over the odds for a head gasket replacement. Maybe two head gaskets on a vee or boxer engine along with milling both heads would be that much?

Similarly $8k sounds like a lot to rebuild a tranny.

Time to find a new workshop I reckon.

8K to rebuild a tranny is extortion. I'd love to know what is involved and who quoted that so we all never go there.
When I worked for a European dealership the most expensive gearbox repairs like clutch packs and valve bodies never went above 4k....

We're probably not talking a Turbo 350 here. Costs of transmission rebuilds have been steadily creeping (perhaps more like sprinting...) up in the last decade as they've become more intricate with more precise tolerances.

No 8K is too high. If the OP can provide me the cars chassis number or model and engine details I will price it up. Guarantee it will be half if not a quarter of 8K.
