Why? I think it is excellent service from the dealer to insist on ordering a new, genuine part.

Depends on who's paying. If it's you then I think it's terrible service bordering on criminal. If them, then wonderful!

I don't know, but you'd think they could spray 'something' in the wheel giving it a coating that blocks the leak?

The dealer or the tyre fitters. Don't know, but not me whatever the case!

Possibly. You could weld it too.

However having paid $35k for the vehicle I haven't the slightest intention of letting them off that cheaply.

So...

The story evolved. The leaky wheel ended up causing the tyre to be damaged because it was running soft; I came out one morning and found a bulge on the sidewall. Turned out to be a split inside, caused by the rim rubbing. EDIT = the bulge appeared after the tyre had been fitted to my spare (undamaged) rim.

The supplying dealer agreed to pay the cost of replacing that tyre (nearly $600) and have shipped up the replacement wheel, fitted with (another) new matching tyre. So, tiresome though it has been, I can't fault the dealer's handling of the matter which has been prompt and responsible.
