Yeah, 2nd the comment on being careful about used tires and chasing the lowest price. Although legally you shouldn't, you can end up with stuff that doesn't meet the minimum NZ standard.

My little brother used the work in a tire shop. They replaced a lot of snow tires for a car import compliance company and those snow tires got sent to south Auckland to be sold to poor people who couldn't/didn't want to pay for new tires. Apparently they handle like rubbish, and aren't the safest tires to have your family rolling around on, which is why the compliance place had to change them out in the first place.

When I was young and broke I got bitten buying 2nd hand: after 1,000km the tire warped (had a big S bend in it) and the steel wires came out the side wall. Tire shop said it had been in an accident which busted the belts and it took time and distance for the defect to become apparent.

Funny thing is, looking at the treads they look like they will neither do well on snow nor mud.

I can't comment on summer roads but will they likely do just fine. Only thing is 500 bucks sounds like a lot of money for a set of used tyres?

Agree - it looks like a street pattern doesn't it? In fact the tread pattern looks very similar to the cheap Chinese tyres I removed when I bought the car.

They've got 8.5mm tread, only run 800km so effectively new. If I buy new I get the warranty etc but would be paying over $1000 for the set of 4.

M+S rating means they are all season tires.

Performance summer tires will be stickier, in the dry. But if you are in the market for a mid range tire, the all season tires do OK, especially in the wet.

Two sets of tires ago I brought GT radial champiro 228's (performance touring tire). They had a M+S marking, but won the consumer NZ / Choice Aust test for larger hatchbacks, in regards to wet breaking, and wet cornering.

Replaced them after a 3+ years with bridgestone longlife touring tires, without M+S marking. I Expected similar handling from the bridgestones (being a better brand, and their best touring tire). Was disappointed. The bridge-stone's did OK, but had less grip, and the car felt less planted on the open road.

Those used tires are really cheap. Check the date code before you buy. (don't buy anything older than 3 years).

They don't seem to give very good feeling when doing anything even approaching spirited cornering, but this is probably to be expected. I would say Supercats feel a bit better in that regard. So far anyway definitely happy to recommend those tyres as a very decent cheap option.

Well, they are Hankooks so they are at least a step up on the junk you mentioned at the beginning of the Tread,

If supercats feel better than they must be terrible IMO
