MikeAqua: ... google maps, which seems to cache what it needs for low coverage areas.

Correct, it automatically caches certain areas

& you can download your own areas. Google will also refresh those offline maps based on your frequency of visits to that area. With infrequent visits, offline maps will expire.

ANglEAUT:

Deanonzl: ..., quite a few are not listed. ...

I guess that's my issue then. If NZTA & AKLCC don't list them, you can't add them.

I try & search out all the Council info that is posted online to assist.

To support hands-free driving, you can use the Google Assistant in Waze (Android)

Search for "google assistant waze"

Follow the setup instructions, then scroll to the "What can you ask the Google Assistant to do in Waze.

Waze seems a bit more forthcoming informing you of speed traps etc.
My son particularly liked the Batman voice that was available for a while.
I like the visual display better in google maps.
The BBC sounds app is now compatible with apple car play and android auto. There's something for everyone in the beeb universe.
RNZ app also shows up on car play. But hey I have a radio so don't use it that often.
IOS 14 gave a nice little tweak to Apple car play so upgrade if you haven’t already and you can match your wallpaper to the interior colours (if you have red and blue upholstery)

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I'm surprised there's not more Here WeGo or Here users.

Here is my first choice for navigation guidance. All maps are downloaded onto your device and are regularly updated. There's no need for a data connection unless you want traffic updates. Turn by turn navigation with street names and with a choice of voices.
