I have found the nav system in the mazdas infotainment centre sucks, and would put me off buying anoher mazda, but it is the only thing apart from road noise, that put me off mazdas. Although I think the new models may have apple car play built in. The CX-5 is ok, but I understand it is essentially a heavier and higher mazda 3 , and you can buy mazda 3s a lot cheaper new  than cx5s new, and the mazda 3 is actually nice to drive if you get a 2.5 litre one, such as the SP25.

You're comparing the wrong vehicles there, so for sure the 3 will seem way better value  - the more accurate comparison with the CX5 is with the 6.

The mazda 3 and cx5 I understand do share the  same platform as one another, and the interior footprint of he cx5 isn't that much larger than the mazda 3. . If don't know if any models share the mazda 6 platform, maybe the cx9, although I can't find any reference to that?

I understand the smaller CX3 SUV, and mazda 2,both share the same platform as well, yet the mazda 2 is a lot cheaper than the cx3.But the cx3 does appeal to a lot of people as small suvs are very popular cars to buy.

This is one of the drawcards of an SUV - lots of interior space with a minimal footprint.

That is true. Although in real-life use when transporting things, that extra storage height is often not used anyway, but depends on how you plan on using it. It is something I considered when deciding between the cx5 and mazda 3. Personally I do like SUVs because I am driving higher up, being over 6 foot, and find the visibility is better as well. The other is how soon was the model due to be replaced with a new model. The mazda 3 has just brought out a brand new model this year, although IMO it doesn't look as good. I had heard they had done away with the touch screen feature on the  infotainment system, and pushed it closer to the windscreen, so you have to reply on the dial, which IMO is a backwards step. The CX5 new model has been out for a few years and is probably due for a facelift refresh soon. Probably not really relevant to the OP though if they are buying second hand.

I have read that all three were certainly at least initially based on the same platform, which makes sense given how they were developed: CX-5 was the first of the new 'Kodo design'-based cars (and first with SkyActiv); the 6 followed, then the 3.

This seems to be the way car development is going these days - to say that two cars are based on the same platform increasingly says little about the actual size of the car, what with the platforms being deliberately so scalable.

It's actually just had a minor specification upgrade which is why I bought mine last month. I think we could probably expect a facelift late this year or early next year.

Hi to all. Well i am overwhelmed with response on the subject and thanks again. So majority discussion is on Mazda CX-5.

Rav4 doesnot fit in my budget as they are 25k on average with models starting from 2013 and above. Do u think i should really go for Cx-5 if compared to other cars under my budget like
Honda CrV
Mitsubishi Outlander
Kia Sportage
Or other if any reccomendable ????

The new RAV4 is being released this week (looking at one of the hybrid models for myself).
While the new petrol-only ones start at about $34K, it may mean that the previous shape may be more affordable.

mattwnz: I am guessing mazda is considered a more premium brand than kia, and hyundai are the more premium brand to match mazda. I used to have aofrd festiva that was a rebadged kia, and althogh it was a good low cost car, the interior was all just hard grey plastic and it was underpowered and not the greatest car for driving or safety ratings. But I understand they have improved a lot.

Your Festiva was designed for Ford by Mazda It was also manufactured by Kia under license. The same vehicle was badged Ford Festiva, Mazda 121 or Kia Pride depending on market.

I'm also looking for a mid SUV at the moment. It will replace my couple as meeting a second car for a small family (the other car is a little Mazda 2).

Looking at VW Tiguan, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tuscan (free upgrade to elite currently) or something second hand near new. Budget 20-40k. Ideally with easy access rear seats for taking babies and toddlers in and out of car seats :-)

Have you considered what you actually need a SUV for, and looked at station wagons instead?

Ford do appear to rebadge several mazda models, including their utes, eg the mazda BT-50 and Bounty, were the same as the Ranger I think, with different front grills. The mazda 121 and the ford festiva , at least for teh model I had about 1995, did have totally different bodies though. The Mazda 121 was like a bubble car, while the festiva was curved but IMO looked a lot better, albeit more conventional.

Yes I've thought about station wagons too.

I would assume the elevated seating position in an SUV would make it easier to adjust baby/toddler seat straps and to lift them in and out of the seat? I have no real experience in this though.

I think SUV look a bit nicer but I'm definitely not adverse to buying a station wagon instead of an SUV.

yes SUV easier to "load" toddlers. SW can break your back doing that but then again people have been doing that for years.
