I just bought one of these and it's amazing.. (but above your budget)

It is pretty rare though - I am not looking forward to needing something fixed on it.

However, I upgraded from one of these

And it was _superb_ if you don't want huge amounts of room in the boot. It's decent, just not huge.

Note the RWD version is terrible on loose surfaces but great on seal. The 4wd version is much harder to find but extremely good. It's build on the same platform as the 370Z and has the same engine (340HP) and it honestly handles well. Not "well for an SUV" - it's genuinely good. I race a Lotus 7 replica so I am not just used to big floaty boats and I can't believe how well balanced the Skyline crossover is.

I only upgraded because a got a great deal on the FX50S and it is basically the same car but bigger with a V8 :-)

Nice, they are pretty slick. Which engine is in the one you got? Be interested to hear what you think of it after living with it for a while.

It's the FA20F 2litre turbo - same lump they put in the WRX, so it's no slouch :)

Ha, price aside not sure how well the fuel bill for a 5 litre V8 would go down! Nice car though, I do like it.

I did briefly look at the skylines, but as you said, 4WD is pretty rare.

We purchased a 2015 CX-9 last year, 55ks, NZ New, $23k + $9k trade, 7 seats, truckload of storage and a reasonable amount of features - lane departure, blind spot monitoring, foward collision warning, etc etc.

Is a brilliant vehicle - comfortable, quiet and with a 3.7l petrol (203kw) it has ample power (but not so good gas mileage - but we knew it wouldn't and it doesn't do a huge amount of k's).

Servicing costs have proven to be pretty good value as well - as opposed to other euro options i briefly considered and decided against.

Well worth a look ime.

I mean,

I grew up in Europe in the last 20 years, and the defacto car you'd see when you go skiing in Austria is a Quattro Audi Stationwagen. Everyone and their grandmother have one over there.

It'll offer plenty of grip, good handling because its lower to the ground than an SUV (which could be a bonus on those roads), a solid boot capacity, great comfort, and probably a better cabin experience too compared to the Japanese cars. Towing will be a breeze if you get a diesel, and should be doable with a petrol.

2011+ Audi A4's with Quattro AWD can be had from 20k with decent mileage. The more gruntier S4 with a V6 petrol engine (300+HP) will be in the 30's. If you need more room, Audi A6's with Quattro are starting to fall within your budget.

I would say you get more bang/buck getting one of those than an SUV (especially since SUV's are the most desired body shape ATM)

The only downside will be maintaining it of course.

in fact some say, Subaru is better than real 4WDs ... but some say those weren't CVTs .... i have a subaru CVT. no matter how you spin it, it's still a CVT. takes a half a yawn before anything happens. and mine is an upgraded CVT that takes 221kW and 400Nm torque. it's much better than other CVTs though. had an X trail CVT and that was a dog.
