DjShadow:

Caltex have launched a website regarding FlyBuys/Airpoints Pumped starting on Aug 1: https://pumpediscoming.co.nz/

They are going to start letting you stack the discounts too

The NZX press release from last month seemed to infer the program would be aligned across both chains so I'd expect to see stacking discounts coming to Z as well.

The AA Smartfuel BP is still the better one for me.  As city drivers we wait for the weekly 10c promos.  Because you get to accumulate the points up and apply them to 50L the AA Smartfuel is better than redeeming the discounts immediately every time.

RE: the Farmlands card.  Adjusted some figures into my spreadsheet.  Z Energy with 12c discount, assuming it also gets Airpoints.  12c w/ Z Energy is about the same as 5c discount with BP (AA Smartfuel) accumulated up and applied to 50L.  Because the minimum discount is 6c with BP and you get that every day it is even better and requires no planning.

Here in Wellington there are not many Caltex stations left.  We have one in Newtown but they tend to be one of the most expensive $2.259/L if not, $2.299.

Edit - the cheapest in Wellington is if you live in Upper Hutt.  They have Waitomo so BP in the vicinity matches them by 1c difference (~$2.079 instead of the usual $2.219), because it is a full service station, you then also get the 6c or 10c discount with the AA Smartfuel programme.

Not sure what the "visit multiple petrol stations" bit is in relation to.  You can do multiple fills at one visit quite easily, especially with the app.  For example, before my last rally, after accumulating for the prior two months I put 2x$40 into the tow vehicle, 4x$40 into 4 20L containers, then redeemed the whole lot on the remaining 3x20L containers and saved $123ish.  All in one visit without going in store.

I don't have to "carefully monitor fuel" as I can see at a glance from a handy gauge on the dash when a vehicle will need $40 or more of fuel.

Overall, very minimal effort as far as I can see.

Without the app.  You can just pump the car 2x $40 separately go in and pay the 2 transactions separately.  You don't have to pump, pay and come out again and pump and pay again.

As mentioned above Pumped will allow stacking of discounts from the 1st August. Even though Airpoints and Fly Buys earn is pretty terrible $ wise it will mean however that the program actually offers better value with the same level of discounting than Smartfuel does.

Caltex fuel in the Hutt Valley and Porirua is often cheaper than the other big sites which is a marketing strategy they adopt.

We are on Johnsonville so no Caltex here.  Tawa Caltex closed down some years ago, ditto Cable Street CBD and Taranaki Street.  Gaspy app now shows Porirua Caltex and BP both at $2.239.

Edit.  Porirua does have a BP Self Service at $2.219 but that one only gets the 6c AA Smartfuel, the 10c won't work with it.

Those are close to a Caltex station might get a better deal.  I had a look online but the details are going to be available on the 1st of August.  Accumulate Caltex discounts, redeemed at 50L with the ability to get Flybuys as well?  Instead of gettting a cash discount but to earn Airpoints and then put the larger amount on the credit card and earn more points there also?

NZ should adopt what Australia did, cap fuel discount at 4c/L; a trivial discount that you can easily save by your foot alone.

SmartFuel is smart for BP. The sweet spot is around 4-6 top ups, saving rate declines significantly after.

The prices around my area doesn't make sense any more so I've been strictly on Mobil Card + GULL + GASPY

it's 254.4 for BP 98 vs 228.9 Mobil 98 so yeah, the difference is too great to justify anything.

My rule of thumb is only use it if they're the same price as competition.

What does this actually mean? I've seen this "cap" mentioned before, but when I was over there a few months ago I saw 10c and higher discounts when buying $x of groceries.

I don't see how, that would be a blatant violation of the deal with the ACCC. I also can't say I've ever seen a discount higher than 4cpl from grocery spend and I'm pretty sure I'd notice more than 10cpl! Coles (flybuys) do offer discounts that high just to visit a Coles Express but they're one time targeted offers. Woolworths Rewards do not, but Woolies got out of the petrol retailing business (sold out to a British mob)

There are signs for pumped at the unmanned caltex on old Hutt road - will make for some cheap fuel as they seem to match waitomo

That may have been the case; I didn't look too closely.

In my experience the extra Coles discounts are often based around purchases in the Coles Express site rather than off-site purchased - I've seen them offer 10cpl off by spending $20 instore there.

The Caltex email today:

We're excited to let you know that Caltex is joining Fly Buys from 1 August, giving you even more places to save on fuel and earn points.

Every litre counts at Caltex

Every time you reach 20 litres you'll get a point, so if you bought 15 litres last week and 35 litres this week, you'll collect two points and be half way towards your next one.*

Save or stack fuel discounts and earn Fly Buys with Pumped

Save on fuel now with an everyday discount and no minimum spend at Caltex or Z when you scan your Fly Buys. Or stack your fuel discount for later when you spend $40 or more. Fuel discount applies to a maximum of 50L.

That came with a 10c off day too.

But sneakily under-rated by BPs free gas stunt getting all over the news for the chaos it caused.

Conveniently timed much.
