We have spent some time in several small and medium sized provincial European cities in recent years. I’m amazed and impressed with how many of them have brilliant light rail systems and bus systems - not to mention their fantastic national and international railways which we all know about.

Many of these are cities much smaller than Auckland and it’s a bit embarrassing. It seems to me that a key factor here is not population per se, but population density. We’re too thinly-spread which screws-up the per km cost/passenger efficiency calculation.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Also many of those cities pre-date the car so are not built to conform to the ideals of 1950s USA suburbia stuff like boomers want to replicate in every new development here. Because they dont want apartments so noone should get them.

Obraik:

How many people would move from Auckland to Hamilton if they could get to their job in Auckland in a reasonable amount of time? If they end up building the 160km/h train lines between the two cities I would do it.

I'd do it if it's not ran by at. They are too unreliable for me to even train from swanson to the office.

I travel to Hamilton almost every weekend. Personally I wouldn't take up using the train. Needing to get around is still a key requirement.

However, if the train was regular enough would be handy for the partner coming up (she typically buses)
