Given this is your fun car, could you relax your requirements around it being a hatch (and around mechanical reliability)?

Our daily driver is a Pajero. I drive about 100km per day and most of it is open road driving. We also use the Pajero to tow the boat.

The Pajero is actually more economical (the old one was, not sure about the new one yet), but the Mazda is more fun so we take it on road trips unless there is a reason not to. For example a few weeks ago we did a spontaneous weekend road trip to Queenstown. We like driving - volume up, foot down, stop for the occasional coffee, driving.

The fun vehicle needs to be mechanically reliable because it will do some proper road trips I like hatchbacks because they tend to be more versatile from a luggage perspective. I'd consider a sedan, but I don't want to go too big.

I'm 6'1" and there's plenty of head room for me (in front and back) but YMMV if you're taller or don't have your seat as low as I do.

I'm only 6' but I have a long upper body. My seated height is the same as a friend of mine who is 6'4".

In the Golf the line between the top edge of the windscreen is below my eye level with the seat all the way down. Shame as I really wanted an R.

I am just a touch under 5'4" and I have no headroom issues at all in our MK7 Golf. Back seat is a little tight, but front is all good.

Not sure how far away the MK8 Golf's are from NZ, but there may be some run out deals coming on the outgoing MK7 range, which may help the budget.

The reviews I've read suggest it's 0 - 100 in 7.3s, which is about the same performance as our Mazda. Also range is only 233km with the heater off.

It's not the fastest EV but even a slow EV with its instant torque can feel faster than it actually is.

Is this car going to be used for long distant road trips? If its main use is local trips then the range is unlikely to be a concern.

At 5'4" you shouldn't have headroom issues in any car.

I've sat in a Golf and a Golf GTI and have the same problem with both ... the top edge of the windscreen is below my eye level, even with the seat all the way down.

I would absolutely love a Golf-R, but they just aren't an option - unless they come with a free chiropractor.

At the $60k price point, with plenty of performance and headroom, I'd look at a near-new Nissan Fairlady.

Well oddly I test drove the Civic Type R this afternoon for an hour or so. Well worth a look if you're ok with a manual. Brutally fast, and I loved the rev matching on the way down the box. Not as harsh riding as I was expecting.

And the boot is enormous!

Do you need usable back seats?

Seen as small sedans were mentioned, the WRX STI could be worth a look (if headroom is enough).

That does look nice. I was just concerned about all the suck on bits of plastic. Cars like that tend to look silly in 5 years time.
