Reports of gen-1 Kona EV gear reducer and/or motor failures continue to slowly roll in globally with another in NZ in the last few weeks. It's not of epidemic proportions but the uncertainty for owners is raising many questions on forums.
From what I've heard so far Hyundai NZ are responding responsibly to cases, most of which are out of warranty but I believe it would be in their best interest to formally extend warranty coverage on these items as to not ruin the reputation and resale value of the gen-1 Kona EV.
Many of the earlier examples such as my own have a recently-replaced battery and are expected to be on the road for many more years.
You can see that the UK owner above is on the hook for an incredible £10k of of repair costs on a 2021 Kona EV due to no fault of their own.
These drive unit failures in my opinion are due entirely to factory design defects and covering the cost of replacements on a case by case basis is admirable but does not address the uncertainty.
The document I maintain regarding the gear reducer is at this link.
