martyyn: Spoke too soon.
Clearly the entire Wellington population decided today was the day they would go on holiday.
If you're still in Wellington, stay there. If you're already in the road, turn around.
Traffic is pretty much at a standstill from south of the Ōtaki turn off on the new road right through to Levin.

Why people decide to leave during the day just baffles me.
Yes it's easier to wake up at a leisurely time and hit the road around midday, but holy hecka you pay for it by being part of the traffic problem!
Getting up and hitting the road at a sparrow's fart, or waiting until the evening to travel is so much more relaxing.

Actually according to various posts on the "Traffic Updates - Horowhenua Kapiti Wellington" Facebook group, it was like that all the way up to Bulls...
Auckland was the same yesterday.
We drove Napier to Auckland from 9am yesterday - road was fine going our way - there was a bit of a slowdown going into Tirau.
The other direction, however, was a different story. Queue into Tirau from Cambridge was about 3-4km, the queues on the passing lanes just before the turnoff from SH1 to SH29 (Piarere) to Tauranga were about 1km long and the queue geting OFF the waikato expressway where it ends at Cambridge went all the way back to to the SH1B interchange (about 5km). The Auckland Motorway was jjust as bad between Manukau and Drury going south.
Seems everyone left their departures until the same time.
I think we're due in Paraparaumu for an event at the end of January, I'm looking forward to driving that road (so long as the seal is still attached to the surface ;))

Went on this day and sounded like we left early enough that we just missed this. We live in Wellington and Mother-in-law lives in Waikanae so usual routine is to do Xmas at Waikanae then drive north to see my parents (Waikato) on 27th. Did that this time and breezed through the new road, though it did slow down a bit when it went back to one lane further up but nothing like previous years when it could take 90+ minutes just to get from Waikanae to Otaki. Saw on the Facebook updates that the big hold up happened a bit later after we were through. The bit between Sanson and Bulls was a bit slow as usual but otherwise only really bad bit on the trip that day was for some reason the last 10km into Taihape took 45 minutes. Otherwise pretty smooth the whole way.
Coming back it was a joy to drive straight through rather than the usual standstill through Otaki.

Thats unusual I've been through Taihape countless times and never seen congestion. I wonder what happened.

Yeah never had an issue there any other time. Didn't seem to be any accident or anything, was just crawling until you got through the main street.
