jonathan18: We’ve got silver/black plates on both our cars and based on my observations is it’s the reflectivity of the ‘black’ background that causes the (in)visibility issue - the background isn’t a true black but has a distinctly reflective ‘texture’ that looks silver under headlights (and on some angles with direct sunlight). Ironically, if they’d just left the background black I imagine they’d have been fine!

But then they wouldn't have a nice large reflective target for the speed laser that you are legally required to attach to your car.

I've got slim black & silver plates on my car, they look much better than the massive white originals.

Parking lots with licence plate recognition cameras seem to pick them up fine, and that's all I really are about with regard to readability.

My black/silver plates are about 7 months old and exhibit this "issue".

I just had my first experience of this issue. I was following a car tonight in the next lane over that had these plates, almost impossible to read the plate on that angle. Another car came up directly behind them and instantly is was easy to read the plate. Was the cars headlight illuminated the back of the car it was very easy to read the plate but before then it was almost impossible.

Thanks @Oblivian for the headsup

"From December 1, the NZTA will be adopting a new manufacturing process using “non-reflective black material for the background and reflective white material for the text” in order to make them easier to read."

In addition to dropping the silver text option, the white text on black background option is going to change, so it remains white on black when caught in headlights, rather than inverting to black on white as it does now.
