Placing it outside makes a big difference, I am currently using the indoor antenna outside (with a thin plastic cover against the rain)... still using the hotdog can and I've gained another 40km versus indoors. This is how I got my 167km record with the standard antenna. I'll keep using this until my big antenna arrives and I can mount everything outdoors :)

We've got 3 outdoor sockets around the house, all of them are under shelter so the plug/socket is safe from rain. I've used a thick cable from Bunnings and as you can see the entry into the ABS enclosure is so tight no moisture can get in it. I will tape it up when it goes outside permanently as an extra precaution.

I have an outdoor socket that is the other side of the yard!

I was looking into a solar panel\battery installation and going all out with it!

I've got a rPi zeroW that would work wonders in a waterpoof case with a solar panel and battery. The TV aerial on the roof currently is a perfect mounting point, which will get me above all the other houses and then a i see the horizon.

The little things make the biggest difference.

Well solar would work, as the Pi Zero really doesn't consume much current. However the problem with solar is that the current is not constant, so you will need a somewhat complex (and expensive) battery backup system to keep the flow steady.

Really need a 2.5A supply for a stable USB stick. Devices are low, but the sticks load up the ports

I've been using a Raspberry Pi model B with an ebay DVB dongle for the last few years. Have this small antenna https://shop.jetvision.de/Diapason-MCX-Antenna-for-ADS-B-USB-Dongle

Get around 200 km range which I'm pretty happy with, the antenna is about 4.5 m high overall and I'm not on any kind of hill. Thinking of getting the flightaware prostick plus some day.
