We are leaving the morning of the 23rd to catch the ferry in wellington at 1445 (have to be there at 1345) Probably going to leave at 0430 which leaves 9h15m for the trip, and have 3 planned stops, one for breakfast, one for lunch and one for petrol, and have some time up the sleeve for any unexpected stops (3 year old and pregnant wife).

No one has mentioned Adrenalin Forest out Porirua way

Again though, doubt they're open on Christmas day and not suitable for all ages, levels of fitness, fear of heights, tendency to take some risks, etc.

Haha, I was fixing it but you responded too quickly, should be all good now.

I've always found the url BBCode rather fickle on here, and this messageboard really could do with a Preview Your Post feature.

If you like Lord of the Rings etc  Kaitoke Regional Park would be a great place to visit. The indigenous flora and birds are awesome there

Seems like none of the hotels like Mercure or Bay Plaza have free parking. $20 per day for parking??

Yeah, that's a standard rort for Wgtn hotels... cheap rooms and expensive parking.

Last time, I just parked in the street. Free and plenty of spaces after 5pm?

A number of Wellington hotels have carparks directly under them, and you can pay them a premium for using these, or just pay Wilson (or whichever company) directly and save heaps. I've done this at the Intercontinental and Travelodge, anyway; all-night parking was something like $5. All-day parking is not cheap, but given you're from Akld surely you're used to exorbitant parking charges?!

You've always got the choice of using street parking which is free over-night (may not want to do this with a loaned car!); Wellington also has free weekend parking (time-limited on Sat; all-day Sun), and I assume it's the same on public holidays.

Free after 5PM? Sounds good! What time does it stop being free? I'll probably have to get up at 6am or something to move the car or pay the meter. undecided

  • I can confirm Te Papa is open on 25th (son working there that day).
  • If you're heading to Zealandia (not altogether cheap), go on up to the top of Wright's Hill (totally free) for a totally different and even higher view of Wellington. Walk up to the top from the furtherest car park. Also old WWII gun emplacements which have been dug out. Underground tunnels won't be open (only long weekends) unfortunately. If it's a clear day, you can see Mt Taranaki off in the far distance to the north.
  • Also recommend the West Wind wind farm at Makara. You can get up close and personal with one of the turbines. Make sure you strike the casing with a stone and hear the audible vibrations up and down the tower. A walk out to the cliff tops will let you see even more WWII lookouts and a good view across to the South Island.
  • I've driven SH3 a lot recently and can confirm that Foxton is currently cheaper than Levin for fuel.

25th is a public holiday so meter parking is free.  Technically 2 hour limit still applies starting from 8 am, wouldn't think parking wardens would be on duty that day but it's up to you if you want to risk that.
