trig42;

Another harbour crossing will cost upwards of $1-1.5b (more if it includes rail and road).

and the rest, estimates put a second harbour crossing at 4-6 billion for a road/rail solution, for rail only its looking to be about 2 billion

MikeB4: Driving from Devonport to the Esmonde Street intersection took a crazy amount of time at around 2 pm. The time it took us to drive that I could have driven from Wellington to Upper Hutt.

The Esmonde road on-ramp is particularly bad, always a bottleneck at peak time.

Devonport is a nightmare at the best of times. Having that many people in that small an area with a single road in and out is madness.

This is how the govt/council works :

How can we make the infrastructure better?
Ok this is what we need fixed in 5 years.
Ok let's do a study that takes five years and pick the option of fixing half.
Resource consent: after pleasing everyone five years has passed.
Ok let's do it. Slow as workers take five years.

After 15 years it's done but you're 10 years behind the 8 ball.

I used to live down there. It could take me an hour to get to Takapuna on the weekends (when they weren't blocking off the road for some Marathon/cycle race or other 'fitness event'. Got even better when they turned it all one lane and the rest a cycle lane that that the school kiddies weren't even allowed to use.

Should have just had 2 lanes each way and no parking or traffic lights from Takapuna to Devonport.laughing

When I was a kid I remember the Naval Base '4 0'clock rush' when everyone finished work and made a dash for it... bumper to bumper all the way from Devonport, never thought that in a few years it would be like that all day!

In 2004 on News Talk ZB I talked to Kerry (topic was how bad the traffic in Auckland was.. or alike). I was saying to her that traffic is awesome and used that as an opportunity to thank every driver in Auckland to be so polite and considerate on the roads. At a time memories of how bad the traffic (back home) could be was so vivid;

Today I am travelling 7k to work in 15 minutes and I think it is too much... I want to walk and not drive at all.

What we can do is to help each other to find a job close to home so that we can walk or to help others to find property closer to the place they work.

Less time waste and less cars on the road. Does that sound unrealistic or practical?

How about starting the thread - something like (WWW): "Wanted to Walk to Work" with the standard topic headlines w express of interest - [WTD]-[JOB]-[Area]-[Brief description]; or [WTD]-[Rental]-[Area]-[Description]

Yeah there aren't a lot of IT contracting roles within walking distance of West Auckland.

People already want to live close to work - hence why central Auckland property is insano-expensive (among other reasons).

That is why this absurdity of zoning some areas for living in, and some for working in has to end. If you want to work close to home, you have to live close to work.

Did the Toll road north today, that is a great bit of roading with cool tunnels and an awesome bridge over it

I've only been living in Auckland for about 6 months (from Canberra, Australia), and although the traffic is bad I think it is luckily quite predictable. Don't try and get out of town at peak hour, don't try and get to the airport at peak hour (unless you know a few great back roads) etc. That aside, I think there is a desperate need for long term infrastructure projects in relation to transport in Auckland. Tunnels, bus lanes, bike paths, the works... now just to find the huge bucket of money needed!

MY car can change into a helicopter so I just press this big red button to transform when I get stuck in traffic.

And because it's such a dangerous bit of motorway, it's plagued by speed cameras undecided
