My reference was to the whole post, not just the sentence you quoted
The/a reason Trump was elected was because there is a large body of people who are sick of being told what to think, what they can say, what car they should drive, how fast they can drive it, what shower head they can use etc etc etc. Trump seems to say that he will be more liberal than the "Liberals", and base his policies on what he perceives to be best for his country, not what some mathematical model predicts what might happen.
Ps I think he's an idiot but I sort of see his point, and that of the people who voted him in

It may have been a bit more successful if those turning right properly turned into the lane closest to the centre line, rather than swinging into the leftmost lane.

So many drivers seem to forget that when turning right into a multi-lane road, you must take the lane closest to you, and not swing into the leftmost lane.

Not quite right, you're supposed to take the SAME lane as the one you're in, so when turning left from a multiple left turn Road, the lane should be the same throughout the turn, or we'd all end up trying to squeeze into the left hand lane!

There seems to be a trial of "keep going on red" on the North Shore at present, a lot of drivers seem to have got the hang of that one

It's nothing but arrogance and self-centricity, a bit like as described in this thread. It goes hand-in-hand with the parts of the mindset in which people think they can drive at whatever speed they like, dive across three motorway lanes to take an exit ramp, not bother using indicators (esp at roundabouts) etc. I blame the liberals

Literally, no there isn't a fast lane, but by rights, and when the keep left unless overtaking rule is applied it is a fast lane.

Higher speeds result in higher CO2 emissions. The curve rises steeply after 90kph. Clearly this government just doesn't care.

They could reduce CO2 emissions from transport significantly via a 90kph speed limit rigorously enforced......and at the same time lower the death toll on the roads for no cost at all.

Traffic in congested areas actually flows better if it's moving slower....and with fewer accidents.

They just don't care.

I'd make it a lane where EVs can go 110 kph...while ICE (internal combustion engines) vehicles are fitted with speed governors that prevent them from going over 90kph. To ensure compliance they would have GPS logs tracking their actual speeds. ICE cars would be off the roads by 2030.

The world is heating up much faster than even the pessimistic projections., starting at the top and bottom, but mainly the top. Our government has its head up its backside......and most of the public remain blissfully unaware of the disaster accumulating 'out there'. The Arctic ocean will likely be ice free in the next year or two. The "old ice" is almost all gone. Now all they are seeing is the new ice formed each year...and this year it's way behind schedule.

In simple terms, aerodynamic drag (which is mostly what you're using power from your engine to overcome when you're driving at highway speeds) increases with the square of the speed. So 110kph is about 21% less economical than 100kph. Internal Combustion engines run more efficiently at wider open throttle settings, which tends to offset that. AFAIK, there's no increase in efficiency with rotational speed of an electric motor, so I'd say an EV would use 21% more battery power (i.e. resources) at 110kph than 100kph.

Assuming that all the energy for EVs comes from coal certainly isn't true in NZ. If you have lots of solar cells, and a way of getting that energy to your car (e.g. Solar Wall or similar) then all you would lose would be the income you could have got by selling the extra energy back to the power company.

NZ is 83% renewable power at any time of the day - minimum....and often over 90% renewable, so EVs makes good sense in NZ.

That said....even if 100% of the power came from coal, you STILL aren't adding the 220g / km the average car releases by burning petrol.

This is one of the reasons Tesla and others have explicitly linked EV power with home solar power generation (and storage -> Telsa powerwall).

All together, they make a powerful case for burning less coal to make less power because you're making it at home...and storing it for later when you'll need it.

Ultimately this will be what people do at home and what power utilities large and small (co-ops?) will do at neighbourhood / apartment building level.

The EVs are just part of the power generation and storage ecosystem already available now.....and it's getting cheaper month by month as new technologies emerge at all levels. EVs can also be part of the powerwall setup at home. An EV with a 60kw battery could power the average home for a day or two.....if there was benefit in that.

The genie is out of the bottle on this one.

BUT by driving an EV at 110km/h vs. 90km/h you are currently increasing the carbon footprint, so doesn't make a rule for EV's to travel at 110kim/h but no one else seem a little selfish?

It's a useful measure of how serious the government is about climate change and reducing emissions.

Not very.

Above 80kph drag increases exponentially. So going from 100kph to 110 increases emissions and does so out of proportion to the increase in speed.

But that's just CO2.

Diesel emissions are actually cancer causers and the government is apparently happy to increase those, too

I can't vote for these clowns.

I can happily do 110kph in my electric car, but the next one is going to have Bioweapon Defense Mode to filter out all the diesel exhaust from my air intake. It's really bad out there some days...
