ever been stuck in an Auckland traffic jam? it can take 10 mins to get over the harbour bridge.

are you going to stop cooking inside at home because its cased multiple house fires last year? it was easier when people cooked outdoors.

"However it means working from your home, not from your car." thats your opinion but unfortunately i suspect its in the minority. i use my phone in the car a bit but i ave blue tooth, either for an unexpected work call or for organising with my with what/who is picking up the kids or what's happening later in the evening.

Im more than capable of driving and talking on the phone at the same time so i do have my priorities right thanks.

She spends 90% of the day away from the office either out of the country, out of town, or out and about. CEOs and CIOs wanting to discuss multi million dollar purchases or request a meeting or confirm a meeting don't want answer phones. Cafes are not secure or private so no.

I don't buy this argument. Calls can be organised by appointment. She can always find a place to pull over. Maybe once in a blue moon there is an acceptable exception but missed business is almost always nothing more than an excuse not to change a habit.

Ever been self employed or have a significant portion of your remuneration performance based? If you are or have been you would know that calls mean business and that means livelihood

I was self-employed for most of my working life. I didn't even have a car for most of that time. Is that business worth dying for? I don't accept that driving and phoning is an essential requirement of modern life.

That is precisely the kind of attitude that causes problems. No-one ever thinks they can be in the wrong. Try getting yourself tested with a phone on a track sometime. Mythbusters did a very revealing episode on this.

That is my final comment on this issue. I have said everything I have to say.

@Rikkitic

Sorry but you dont know the first thing about me or my ability, and how well i can drive. i think and know i can be in the wrong but my EXPERIENCE has taught me things, and many people on our roads dont have this experience or treat driving as a right, its not its a privilege, and more people need to realise that.

But by your logic someone fresh off the plane who has the qualifications to drive a taxi, or even just drive for a courier company or transport company is more qualified to use a phone or a radio in their vehicle than i am.

so that sir is complete and utter rubbish.

We need to do something.

My daughter and I were nearly taken out on a cross-walk in Ellerslie yesterday by a phone-using male driver.

On a freaking crosswalk - with white stripes and traffic calmers and loli-pop signs in the middle of a shopping area.

About half an hour later a female on her phone failed to notice the light had turned green.....until people honked.

The police just aren't enforcing this one.

Correct, thats one of the issues.

the other is there are not enough police, and those we do have are used else where.

No one wants to be a police officer these days, because all it takes is someone with a phone and an internet connection and you ago viral on the internet for a non event.

We need more camera based technology to target things like this, and other easy to target driving related issues like using a transit lane/bus lane etc.

Smarter people than you or I where this issue is concerned have made it legal to speak on a phone in the car.

Sorry, I don't class a politician as a 'smarter' person.  If you listen to the "experts" in the field of driver cognition and human behavior that have researched this stuff time and time again, mobile phones, held or hands-free would be completely banned immediately from a moving vehicle.

That would be political suicide however at the next election...so it will never happen. It's also socially unpalatable, just look at some of the posts above for examples of that.  "I'm a better driver than everyone else" is an age old sad excuse for not wanting to follow some common rules for the collective good of all road users.  Most people also don't get the difference between individual risk and collective risk, most road rules are made to try and minimize the latter.

How about a cell phone jammer in every car if the car is moving?

We never use the phone directly in our cars. The phones connect automatically to the hands free system.

The problem with jamming phones in cars is that it would inhibit the internet connectivity of sat nav systems for traffic information, etc. There is also emerging technology which automatically notifies emergency services after a serious accident.

Not really emerging - that tech has been in use in the USA in various forms for years.
