I think my wife has chosen (I think) a Britax Boulevard, price matched by Baby City, because they're helpful and they have a rewards program. It's meant to be good, safe, heavy, but we won't need to move it around. I don't think it has a cup holder...

Does anyone have any feedback on which work well in small car? My wife has a Swift Sport which has fixed back Recaro seats... it makes for not alot of space for a rear facing car seat because the car seat requires too much forward space at the top.

We have one of the Farmers ones in my car (Subaru Forester) but it wasn't going near the Swift.

@shapenz, go to a baby store, they'll recommend something and try it out in your car. Diono has a reasonably compact model, baby on the move stocks it, I think baby city does too.

^^ this. All the convertible ones I've seen (i.e. rear facing > forward facing) are pretty sizeable. You might need to find one that doesn't convert. We've got a Ford Focus hatch and even for that we couldn't put the passenger seat all the way back with a rear facing car seat; it took up too much room (always made sure the biggest seat was behind the passenger and not the driver).

Don't know about the fixed back seats though. Do they still have the tether on the back of them? You might need to install a mounting point yourself otherwise.

Maybe something like this could help? Note the provisos about the child having to be able to sit unaided.

When my wife was pregnant we got a car suitable for a baby. Nissan Qashqui, which is a car that looks a bit like an SUV. Makes things a lot easier than trying to stuff a lot of things into a small car.

Tradeoff trying to stuff a larger car down Wellington streets and into Wellington carparks though? wink

It is slightly more difficult, but that's why we got a midsized car and kept the Corolla for commuting. We don't often go into the city in that car. If we have to in future it'd be ok, it's smaller than a full SUV.

Street size isn't an issue, we live in the southern suburbs, not the awful damp cramped southern suburbs.

Damp and cramped!? That's a bit rough. Not too bad today smile:

I can even hear the sea crashing as I work. Well, should be working.

Let me do a prediction. Within 12 months your wife will no longer have a Swift Sport Recaro seats or not.

The only reason it's not damp there is because the constant wind is blowing the dampness away! Newtown and such is pretty awful. Not enough parking, narrow roads, etc. There will be some better areas, the newer ones, but north Wellington is more spacious and seems generally drier.

Haha sadly my wife likes to drive foot to the floor and wanted either Swift Sport or an S3... it was a little less scary being a passenger in the Suzuki so we went with that.

Our little guy is 10 months old but it's getting a bit annoying having to swap cars all the time and adjusting all the mirrors / seat etc.

I'll have to drop into Baby on the Move sometime - we did visit Baby City here (Hamilton) but they didn't 'think' they had anything suitable / couldn't be bother trying.

In that case remove the Recaro adult seats and bolt on 5 point harness Recaro child racing seat complete with safety helmet and neck strap.
