gzt: School holidays are July 3rd to 20th. That should be a nice slow start for the tunnel.

I'm thinking the major trucking will take a bit longer to adjust their routes after the actual opening.

Traffic projects can win and lose elections these days. NZ election end of September.

Seems the perfect idea, open it while commuter traffic is a little lighter! Would be nice.

It'll be interesting to see the uptake for heavy vehicles, I wonder if it would be another option that they would use as required, rather than as a set route. Already happens when there's a mess on the motorway anyhow, this is just more viable than the small suburban streets. The DG restriction would be the other factor for this, surprises me as I would think of this as a perfect freight diversion around the city centre that they'd want to encourage.

I think it will open early on a Monday morning, likely the first Monday of the school holidays which is the 10th of july.

they dont want to advertise a date for fear of having people queue up to go through it.

for me its going to make a difference in my journey to and from work, its about 5km longer using the tunnel but in the mornings, about 630, i think it will save me 5 minutes and in the afternoons about 330 it will save me 10+ minutes. so it will save me about 20% of my total journey time which is awesome.

for those starting later and finishing later may, it will likely have congestion though.

Not sure how this is going to impact my commute.

just moved into Titirangi and I work in Wiri. Currently I'm skirting through Green Bay, Blockhouse Bay and jumping on the motorway at Hillsborough. Just trying to avoid Maioro st. I guess I'll just to wait and see and try a few different options.

My prediction is that it will be open tonight or tomorrow night, I live a few hundred meters from Maioro road and they were changing the traffic lights, they have realligned and repainted the onramp to the existing motorway.

I think there will be a flurry of workers tonight removing more of the barriers.

For me I live in New Windsor and work in Massey, I predict that I will go to work the same way ( Mt Albert - Carrington ) and will come home through the tunnel.

I cant get out of laburnam street most mornings due to cars wanting to get on to the motorway queuing down Richardson road, it will be interesting to see if they make two of the four lanes at Richardson road, right turning, one for westbound ( tunnel ) traffic and the other South bound traffic.

Yup, its not going to aid congestion and is likely to make the NW motorway even worse, they're planning on opening during the holidays and at an unknown time (at this stage) in order for it to be not congested immediately.

When new highway infrastructure opened in the past, such as the Northern Gateway Toll Road, there were long queues of people waiting on the side of the motorway which became a safety issue, NZTA said.

"To reduce the likelihood of this occurring we will not be announcing the exact opening time."

Be interesting to see how much it cuts off my commute. Does this mean the roadworks on the approaches/exits are also complete? Or will the NW and SW motorways still be closed every weeknight? Maoro to Hillsborough closures will negate the benefit of the tunnel if that is the case.

3 months delay on a 5 year project is 5%, doesn't seem too bad. Certainly a lot better than many IT projects.

Down here in the sticks (Manawatu), people are calling for a tunnel to bypass the Manawatu gorge (which has been closed since April). Estimated cost of a tunnel is $1.8 billion+, which is more than the Waterview connection. Also, if it was ever built it would be the longest road tunnel in NZ. Ain't gonna happen.
