See above - my BlackVue 750s setup does this, though there are certainly other (cheaper) solutions that will do this as well.

PowerConnect box means that it won't drain the battery when it is running. Recording capture is based on G sensor motion for bumps and or proximity/movement when things get close to the front or rear of the car.

Would work really well for events occuring in front and back, but even if someone smashed your door hard enough to mark, it should get picked up and saved and you would hopefully capture the miscreant departing along with their face and rego!

Edited to add - Alex @ Drivercam.co.nz is North Shore based and comes highly recommended.

I'm interested in getting myself a cam and have read this thread, and have done some searching. Come across a new release, the Viofo WR-1.. as seen here:

I think I like the more discreet version of this cam over the A119S

Have many people seen this model, and think it's good, based on it's spec and price, compared to the likes of the A119S?

Don't think you can get a GPS addon for the WR1 which is needed if you want to overlay speed and/or position data on the footage.

Oh yes I did notice after I wrote that post that it didn't have GPS, which you'd have to weigh up the cost vs the added bulk of the A119S.

It is a consideration, but personally I think form factor is more important.

On the one hand I had people going 'overreacting - you can't tell the speed for reference due to wide angle lenses and no GPS/speed'. Get one with and it quickly turned into scrutiny of how fast or slow I may be moving when events happen >:/ can't win.

So would you believe I had my first accident in my newish car just 4 weeks after getting my dash cam installed!

Got driven into by some guy pulling out for a U-turn without checking his blindspot. Relatively low speed but made a mess of rear passenger door, wing and wheel.

Fortunately the guy admitted fault, but it was good to be able to just send the footage straight to AA to avoid all doubt. Only took a few days to get it all sorted, excess waived and repairer of my choice all teed up to go.

Worth it!

In this instance, it put the evidence beyond doubt but it wasn't critical. My preference for the rear camera was more around the parking features (someone dings and dashes whilst the car is parallel parked or in a car park) but it certainly doesn't hurt to have for general driving.

It may well be that it would capture a plate from someone who overtakes and then cuts you up etc or help prove dangerous driving if someone who collides from the back is tailgating you beforehand.

Insurance companies only accept if the other party assume liability voluntary. No dash cam will help.

I had a case, where I was bumped into, a police was called, I had incident report, stating as much as the other party was guilty, but they did not admit that to the insurance company.The incident report did not help and the insurance company had me to pay. I can hardly imagine that any kind of footage would help in this situation.

Just recently had the Blackvue 750s 2ch installed with battery back up to my EV so that it could use parking mode. Cost just over $1k fully installed (2 channels + battery back up + 128gb card) took the guy Alex about 2 hours to do - definitely worth it, very professional. Complete peace of mind while parked or while driving now.

I find that pretty surprising TBH - if you have clear evidence of the 3rd party being at fault, I don't see how that couldn't be used to assess liability?

I had a small ding in a car park two years back where the other driver was clearly in the wrong (he reversed out of a parking space into me whilst I was passing - he insisted he had right of way/I should have seen him and stopped) and we both submitted claims accusing the other. Mine was detailed and included photos and drawings and they assessed on this basis that he was at fault and therefore I had no liability and no excess to pay. Not sure in what circumstances having video footage wouldn't make this even clearer?

I have to say as an aside that my dealings with AA for both claims has been excellent so far - perhaps this isn't the case with some other insurers?

The one advertised on the tv shopping channel gets some really bad review if that is any help. In theory it looks good attaching nicely to the rearview mirror but it seems the company put its money into the mounting system rather than the camera.
