Lastman:

Gull’s 91 octane doesn’t contain ethanol so I would think the excise effect over all would be small.

It was a 91 E10 product the last time I purchased it in Auckland (which was earlier in the year). Has it changed since then?

Gull 91 contains no Ethanol, Unless you are taking the mickey meaning their 98 is 91 + E10 lol..

It would seem they certainly do sell 91 E10 but only in some areas (or at least they did in December 2017 when this was written) - https://www.aa.co.nz/membership/aa-directions/driver/fuel-duel-mineral-fuels-vs-bio-blends/

Weird "Mobil sells E3 91 octane and E10 98 octane"
I've never known Mobil to sell any Ethanol...

Gull sells a 98-octane E10 blend at all of its service stations, and a 91 octane E10 blend at 15 locations, predominantly Auckland and Waikato

I see, Their site suggests they do not so I'd take that as current but yeah, they must have at some point!

I'd honestly wish to see a team from one of the Asia cities with solid public transport (rail?) come and do Auckland. Let them have free reign and actually get something done.

Wishful thinking, I don't know if our culture can move away from rubber wheels and asphalt yet.

I have no problem paying fuel tax but only if it's going towards something beneficial. Too bad almost all the time its inefficiently wasted.

By using the tax that's been on fuel for many many years. It was originally called a road tax, but they've siphoned that off for other uses and added extra taxes to make up for it.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one keeping an eye on that. 2012 was a prime example

Budget put aside for new infrastructure and national significance roads Nationwide + AKL increase. Did it come off at the end? Don't beleive so.

https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/petrol-tax-and-road-user-charges-increase

Ironically it dropped considerably just before it. AA keep a log of monthly trends https://www.aa.co.nz/about/newsroom/media-releases/fuel/petrolwatch-june-2012-fuel-prices-at-lowest-level-in-18-months/

2009 - https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/regional-fuel-taxes-replaced

another 3 year boost plan.

And doesn't this headline once again sound familiar.. https://www.aa.co.nz/about/newsroom/media-releases/fuel/petrolwatch-june-2008-record-price-hikes-as-government-announces-inquiry/

"Gull Regular 91 Octane petrol meets the requirements of all spark ignition engines, contains no ethanol, and is less than 50 parts per million of sulphur. This means it is effectively the cleanest burning grade of petrol out there and compatible with all cars and boats in New Zealand designed to run on 91 Octane"

They can convert the cycleways into busways. Especially that pink cycleway that cost $20 million to build. That will get the buses from Dominion rd to Nelson St. And from there, they can easily get to the lower city area where the trams were going to finish anyway.

Either way, my point still stands. In that poor people are being asked to pay billions extra in petrol taxes to fund new transport service's in rich areas. And rich people can more easily avoid the tax by buying EVs, hybrids, generally living closer to their work, more likely to have jobs that can be done from home.

Have you ridden that cycleway? It's like 3m wide at some points. It's not old motorway flyover the whole way.

That doesn't solve the problem of there being literally too many buses in the CBD for the traffic network to function. Plus the buses on Dominion Road would become so frequent that they literally could not stop for people to get off or on. What about this is hard for people to understand,.

Last I checked, Mt Roskill wasn't really a 'rich area' by the way.

I don't like the way that statement is written.  Sure - "designed to run on 91 octane" is stated later.

You're asking for big trouble if running a car specified to use +95 on 91.  Even if it seems to run okay (no preignition etc). Many (particularly Euro) stratified direct injection petrol engine cars need high octane fuel.  It gets messy when there are different variants of the same model on the used import market vs NZ new, some may be fine with 91 - others nope.

It sure seems that way if you live in Mataura or Nightcaps.

Mt Roskill: $927,320
Devonport: $1,517,267

Pretty average area if you go off pricing.

quickymart: If they take off or remove a tax, how are roads going to be maintained, or new ones be built?

The same way roads will be maintained when everybody has an EV and pays no road users charges.. Oh wait.

*Sigh* Really? Of course RUCs are going to be introduced for EVs. It is simply a temporary measure to encourage EVs, and frankly didn't enter into my calculations at all when I bought mine. I always assumed RUCs would be coming sooner rather than later.

And that doesn't even begin to get into whether or not fuel deserves to be even more expensive than it currently is.

Taxcinda, Taxcinda! Damn you Labour government, you've ruined everything! Take me back to the halcyon days of November 2017, when the tax component of petrol nationwide was only... 97% what it is now! That single 3.5c last month rise is clearly 100% responsible for the 30c that prices have risen during that time period! No, I didn't do maths at school... why do you ask?

OK, Aucklanders have a bit more reason to whinge, but not much more reason. I am still paying $2.30 for petrol at my local, even after the 11.5c regional tax, and Wellington is paying $2.50+. And as a heavy user of public transport, I say chuck another 10c on and get on with it. Petrol's only going up long term. Better to build a proper public transport now before the crap REALLY hits the fan.

We are just coming out of an extended period of low oil prices that we will probably never see again. 2015-2017 would have been the perfect time to introduce a targeted levy and build a proper fund for fixing Auckland's diabolical transport networks. Unfortunately the government at the time chose to enjoy the political capital of low petrol prices instead, meaning we're now playing catchup at a much less convenient time. But would you rather wait until petrol prices are $3.50 before you start paying what's necessary to fix this mess?

I think you will find there is a little more than 3.5C of additional tax in AKL region since then. This is the gripe.. I was more than happy paying 2.39 for 95 in whangarei on the weekend, Not 2.64 in AKL.

Sorry, I was just too slow with my edit.

I think this makes Jacinda's point. Gull New North Rd and Mobil Sandringham Rd were both at $2.30 this morning (as I sailed past on the bus). Meanwhile you're paying $2.64 somewhere else in Auckland. How is this the government's fault, and not a failure of competition?

Got it, environmentalism is more important than people being able to get to work to pay for food and housing.

Oh cool apparently I don't have to pay the regional fuel tax they bought in.

Their statement is correct though. You should run your vehicle on the fuel the ENGINE manufacturer specifies. Running a car designed to use 91 will see little to no gain from using 95 or 98 and possibly the opposite. The Fuel supplier with thank you for the donation though. However using 91 in an engine designed for 95 or 98 is playing fuel Russian roulette, eventually the loaded chamber will go off and your bank balance will take a huge rebound hit. The same applies with using methanol in an engine not designed for it. As for the green myth of ethanol that is a whole different saga.

I will add one qualification though, if you do very low KMs and the car spends a lot of time idle using 95 in a 91 designed engine may help with fuel degradation as the 91 fuel does not have a long shelf life. It is often the cause of the petrol weed eater not starting after winter or the boat that has not been winterised not starting at the ramp, although you should have fired it up way before you took out on its first post winter blast, the busy Saturday ramp is an embarrassing place for your pride and joy to get petrol flu.

I would've thought you would be glad to pay the regional tax, which will be used to improve public transport so that those other people you were concerned about can spend less on driving.
