I have never seen police target a multi lane roundabout to catch all the drivers that don't know the indicating rules.

I have never seen a police sting on an intersection for red light runners.

I have never seen police targeting an intersection where people are turning into a multi lane road & should be turning into the closest lane.

I have seen police sitting at the end of a passing lane.

I have seen police sitting on the only reasonable length straight section of road in 30km in the mountains, to catch overtakers.

I have seen speed camera vans on safe long straight stretches of road.

There are things that can be done before making everybody spend time & money on sitting a test.

I have seen a police car parked on the emergency lane of a straight stretch of motorway with all their lights turned off except for the radar detector. That was so dangerous.

All the big crash’s I’ve seen involve speeding or someone crossing centre line.

Not sure how a driving test is going to stop that, people are not going to do those things when being tested.

I’m not sure that I can do a parallel park and being a shift worker would be screwed if lost licence.
Never had to parallel park in just under 40 years driving so don’t see what it has to do with safety.
Always park in mall park or car park building and if visiting someone will find a clear part of road somewhere.

yeah, the low hanging fruit that are easily provable are the ones they always go for.

I too get really sick of s__t driving like this which is also dangerous. Lazy people getting into lazy habits.

In answer to the original question.

Its the 21st century. It shouldn’t be difficult to be able to pop down to the local LTSA office, jump into a simulator, do a 15 minute re-certification test, get assessed and go on ones way.

TwoSeven, you have overlooked that under the influence of the trickle-down theory of neoliberal economics, all the activities relating to drivers' license testing have long been outsourced to the lowest cost external provider. It would not surprise me in the slightest if I was to discover that each actual testing officer is a self-employed contractor on a straight commission arrangement (paid so many dollars per test invigilated).

This arrangement ensures that there is no capital available to invest in the "21st century" driving simulators you suggest, or training the examiners in how to use them and how to evaluate the test results, or indeed even in the buildings that would be required to host them.

Dreams are cheap, real life less so

From everything I've seen, both in my own behaviour and in others, most bad driving is down to emotional immaturity: selfish, thoughtless, ego-driven nonsense.
