Does anyone know how the Airpoints work? For example:

If I get 45 litres one day, do I immediately get 45 Airpoint cents?
Or do they batch them into, say, 10 litre chunks resulting in only 40 cents being earned?
Or do I get nothing at all that day, and it wouldn't be until I fill up for a third time - pushing me over 100 litres - that I get $1?

Caltex's site says to refer to https://caltex.co.nz/promotions/airpoints but that page doesn't exist.

Yep I recall before with Z Energy at least, the points are pro-rata.

Now they can use stacking (accumulation), is that a cash discount like the AA programme? It does say fuel discount. So it is fuel discount with stacking OR airpoints / flybuys if one isn't stacking?

Edit - it seems that stacking is the cheaper way. Rather than 100L to get $1APD. If one is stacking the fuel discounts, can you also earn flybuys or airpoints?

Yes you will earn Fly Buys points or Airpoints Dollars on the purchase that you're using to "stack" the discount.

As you'd only be wanting to spend $40 to stack the discount you're only going to get (off the top of my head my maths might be totally wrong) about 12c in Airpoints Dollars based off current petrol prices.

The fact Airpoints and Fly Buys earn is so terribly poor makes you appreciate how the 6 cpl is an inflated margin to allow for discounting (they can easily afford to give you an instant $2 - $3 discount), where as the Airpoints and Fly Buys earn comes off the bottom line.

In a bit of a spanner in the work to calculation discounts..

The new change as new fast-read small print in the audio ad I noted the other day, 'Discount applies to first 50Lt'

So if you have a larger tank. It's back up to full price..

(b) your Pumped Balance is valid for use for a Fuel purchase of up to 50 litres. If you make a Fuel purchase of over 50 litres in a single transaction, you will pay the advertised pump price for all litres above 50 litres that you purchase in the same transaction;

Wasn't that the case with Smartfuel as well? I don't have a 50+ litre tank, but I seem to recall something about 50 litres in the small print.

Possibly. I've not done SF. But knew of the $40 min spend. And only have a piddly tank. But sure means anyone with a 60/75 trying to maximize their savings by doing small fills to cash up the higher discount to spend are probably negating the effort somewhat?

Yes, AA Smartfuel is redeemed to a maximum of 50L. What we do is put in $40, then $40 again and go inside to pay them separately. We don't have to fill $40 go in pay and come out and do it again. With the BPMe app yes then you need go back in the car to run the app again ... or have someone to do it for you.

Caltex / Z Energy gets also $1APD per 100L of fuel but it is a very little reward. It is tempting for us, however at this point you cannot link up cards. I guess we could use the AirNZ app with another family's member on our phones and uses the screen card barcode but .... it's against the rules and a hassle.

This is all to complicated for me to bother with. I never used smartfuel because the only stations with 95 are the caltex and the Z nearby, I dont want to have to do maths to work this out. Luckly with the falcon out of action im using the MR-S and it has a tiny tank so the 50l limit wont affect me for now. Till I get something to tow with again.

Turns out Caltex changed their mind and aren't offering pumped at Hutt Road despite putting up signs on site.

I wonder if it's to do with the risks around using a mobile phone on the forecourt (to scan the barcode from the app on the self service interface). Do other Caltex/z stations let you use Pumped discounts on the self service interface?

Thanks. Caltex Hutt Road had the same terminals as I've seen at Z sites - looks like this - complete with barcode scanner. So no technical limitation to scanning mobiles, and no policy limitation to people scanning barcodes on the forecourt. Just a commercial decision - to avoid having to give Pumped discounts on top of price matching Waitomo?

Agree on prepaid signs - I fill my tank to the top every time - so they don't get me as a customer

Is it THAT much of an inconvenience?

- you have to go into the store and pay and
- you are doing a $40 top up

then before or after filling doesn't matter much. (exception: how much is a full tank?)

Having said that, I much prefer the "Pay at pump" or phone app solutions which mean I don't have to go into the store...

Yes, it is because I want to get 50 litres if that it what the discount is for. Their stupid POS cant handle that and wants me to buy in dollars, which is before discount so its impossible to maximize the discounts since you have to overpay, and then manually pump to 50l and then go back in to sort it all out.
