still not sure about your first answer, you mean you look into the tank where the level of fuel comes up to meet the fuel cap? i guess you could be right if the tank tapers up and it always fills to where it tapers then there is very little inconsistency to the volume. didn't think of this before.

never knew atmospheric temperature mattered little to the fuel expansion/contraction!

care to explain why?

The recommenders say "for expansion"

I have seen fuel coming out of a breather, a combination of vehicle attitude and fill level.

does make sense, but i would imagine it would be only applicable if you drove a small distance from the petrol station. once the car is running its using fuel and leaving a air gap in the tank.

I'm not sure if there is more than one reason.  But a lot of modern cars have one or more sealed flaps before the actual petrol storage tank to keep dust and contaminants out.  If you fill it right to the top, you risk forcing that valve open and washing dust, dirt and grime near the top of the filler cap in to the tank.  Not such a bad thing if done once or twice I guess.  But it builds up over time.

If you've got a dusty dirty driveway like mine, it's definitely not good!

Not quite sure how your dirt traps work, the fuel goes in the same way as the dirt. I think you may be thinking of the anti-siphon valve.

T Prius 2006 import: 4.42 l/100k around town, short journeys.  4.55 with 3 people + luggage going Auckland-Taupo & return with roofbox on, and AC on all the time because family insists :(
Pretty happy with that.

Pretty happy with that.

When you need to test your HV battery - I am here in Auckland to help.
Year 2006 - depending on ODO - battery can still be good or could be at the end of life.
When it dies - you quickly recalculate your MPG factoring in $4000 for a new batery pack.

2014 Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6L manual computer says my average is 6.0L/100KM.
I drive with the aircon on pretty much all the time as well as the radio.

Well my Smart (which is supposed to be super economical) uses 5.5litres for every 100km ... mind you it's probably because I'm thrashing it to bits every journey just for the giggle factor :-)

That affects the fuel consumption by what ... 0.1 L/ 100ks?

Dunno but all the info you read always says don't use the aircon or the radio if you want to save fuel.
Funnily enough the marketing stuff for the Suzuki Swift Sport says the fuel economy is 6.5L/100KM.

At my old job people used to thrash the Hybrid Toyota Camrys and still only managed 6.5L per 100km (at worst economy), was quite difficult to get them to use anything over 6L per 100km

The whole hybrid \ eco thing is a croc.

Many of your modern euro petrol only small cars like Fiat 500, Punto, Audi A3, Alfa Mito etc are using 5.5L or less.
