Nobody answered my question and went off on CVT's, the love has gone. So I went looking myself.

Sorry if this comes across as bolshy, but the reason people haven't responded to some of your more recent questions is that most of these have already been answered previously and in some detail, and asking them again comes across (to me as at least) as if you've not necessarily read these replies thoroughly.

For example, posts on this and your other related thread have already explained what "tiptronic" is, and what the differences are between CVT, DSG and torque converter-based autos as well as their main advantages and disadvantages.

Seriously, I think you've received a lot of good advice on these threads that can support your decision re a suitable car, but at this point there appears to be an increasing risk of collapsing into paralysis through over-analysis!

I got this impression too.

The OP is looking for a car ~$5k as far as I can tell.

At that price, it will be a bit of a lottery. It will not be low k's and they will just have to hope that it has been serviced well and regularly. Any transmission technology can cause issues if not looked after, and with the mileage likely on a $5k car, you really have no way of telling if it has been looked after. You pays your money, you takes your chances.

If it were me, I'd try and stay away from a CVT that is more than 10 years old. I wouldn't be buying anything Euro in that price bracket. I'd actually try and find a manual, but that may not fit into that price bracket either (Suzuki Swift maybe? Certainly not a Demio/Verisa - same engine. Axela maybe?)

How many KMs you reckon a Corolla 2002 1.8l GL is good for? Auto.

depends on maintenance and how much abuse it took. i think if well maintained it will do at least 300,000. note that eventually wear parts will need replacing too.

How long has it been sitting there? I'd say get a friend to call them and offer $1000. THen next week call them and give $1500 and go from there. Sometimes you win sometimes you don't.

How many KMs you reckon a Corolla 2002 1.8l GL is good for? Auto.

Mine is a 2006 Corolla GL 1.8L Auto.

It has about 230 000km on it (I brought it with about 175 000km on it 5 years ago).

I would expect it to last comfortably past 300 000km.

Mechanically the only issue I have had has been a tired belt tensioner that needed to be replaced that was causing a whining sound after cold starts only when in gear. (I misdiagnosed as a transmission issue initially). A service picked up the oxygen sensor being slow to respond so had that replaced too.

Also blew a speaker (may have been due to more powerful aftermarket head unit I put in for Bluetooth, aux in & ipod interface), so I replaced all the speakers. (plus added sound deadening in the doors)

Other than that, just normal maintenance stuff: 1 set of tires (due for another now), wheel alignments, lots of cabin air filters, few engine air filters, set of spark plugs, regular oil changes, brake pads/skim rotors, 3x headlight bulbs, 1x number plate bulb. 2x transmission flushes (those are expensive $350+), plus a little collision damage. (and of course the recall work regarding the air bag)

Mine was a leased car (part of a company fleet), then sold to a second tier rental car company, who I brought it off. As such you can be confident that it has been thrashed by drivers, but also has been serviced by the companies.

Given your obvious risk aversion, the corolla seems like a prudent choice. (although you can always get mechanical breakdown insurance for a euro if you prefer that)

$3500 for a 2002 corolla with 170 000km is cheaper than what comparable cars are selling on trademe.

Any mechanic should be able to do a pre-purchase inspection on these common cars.

Thanks Scott, there is no shame in a Rolla IMO, common sense practical vehicle.

I looked at the new Shape Mazda Demio, 1500cc Sports and it turns out to be a CVT, sure enough they cam in manual, torque and CVT type transmissions. Im glad I asked. but whats odd is there is no gear selector up and down on it, so how can it be CVT, I thought CVT was like tiptronic but with a different clutch system?

CVT is not "like tiptronic". It has no gears and no clutch. It is made up of belts.

Correct. CVT has no gears. Older Primera's etc like to advertise themselves as 6 Speed CVT, but in reality they have infinite "gears". There are some videos on youtube that show how it works.

Ok then folks, if your buying a mazda 2/demio beware, it comes in 3 transmissions. luckily i ask and they showed me the compliance certificate. it kind of stick out higher up the dash like the newer hondas. but i dont know if that means CVT or if the Torque gearstick sits there too.
