Thanks Linuxluver, I had no idea EVs were available at such a low relative cost. Gutted I purchased a petrol car in September last year for just getting around the city and hadn't even thought to look for an EV thinking they'd be much more expensive.

NZ is almost a perfect test bed for EVs - a high proportion of renewable energy, and we can generate more than we need off-peak, which is a perfect time to recharge a car.

Agreed and another reason is we also have high percentage of off street parking and garages where people can charge their own cars.

Very cool. Add more charging points, blend them into bathroom/meal/rest stops, etc

$7-40 ChCh to Nelson

OMG what an ordeal!  It only takes 4:30 tod rive from Nelson to ChCh in good weather.  This dude spent about that much time faffing about charging.

12 hours (the total journey is enough time for Nelson to Invercargill, maybe even bluff!

BTW a 2012 Nissan March (petrol powered car comparable to a leaf)  ~$6k is a typical buy now i.e. half the cost twice the capability.

What an ordeal, that Model A with the 2-speed planetary transmission. So much better to ride a horse, half the cost, twice the capacity.

Last year they would have been a lot more. The prices of older (3+years) EVs us coming down rapidly as new EVs appear with with larger batteries. The Renault ZOE with the 41kWh battery now available via EV Central in Taupo. They have *30* of them coming!!! That sort of thing will push down the prices of earlier EVs.

For that reason, it's probably best to buy the cheapest one that will do the job and play be buy a much better one in a couple of years. Or......buy the best one you can afford and hope it keeps as much value as possible for the trad-in on a Tesla Model 3 or similar in 2019. :-)

...and 16.9kg of CO2 / 100km for your Nissan March.

Not doing that makes it worthwhile to drive an EV.

Nothing makes a 200% increase in trip times worthwhile ... may as well bring back stage coaches laughing

Or a Nissan LEAF. The fast charging infrastructure in NZ caters for them like nothing else. :-)

I could get to Wellington in a day easily once the fast chargers are in Cambridge or Tokoroa and, Taupo and Waiouru. The latter is under construction right now...and Unison want a fast charger in Taupo yesterday. The rest of the network required is already there.

Cheapest EV this week is a Mitsi i-Miev for $9850. The lowest I've seen yet.

The cheapest Gen 1 (2010-2012) Nissan LEAF is $11,990

The cheapest Gen 2 (2013-2016) 24kWh battery Nissan LEAF is a 2013 for $18,295

The cheapest conversion EV is a 1992 Toyota MR-2 for $23,000 (This is an awesome car. I'm amazed no one has bought it yet).

The cheapest EV van is a Nissan e-NV200 2014 (24kWh battery) for $31,999

Seriously? $23k for a 25 year old car that has done a quarter of a million km?  When a decade newer MR2 is about $8k?  So you're paying a 15k premium for an electric conversion, which to be honest looks a bit "home built" to me.  I think the seller is dreaming, tbh

Yep, very old MR-2 with some dodgy looking home made electrics (PS I'm a chartered electrical engineer).  Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole

I can't comment. :-)

The price will be partly due to it being unique. In NZ, it's the only way you could be driving an electric MR-2 unless you do a conversion yourself. :-)

It's clearly a hobby.....and money / practicality will be secondary to "I want...." :-)

What happens when the charging stations are full, i.e. you have to wait for other cars to finish charging?
